    A relative is selling their car, a 5 door 98 Nissan Micra, 1l petrol, manual, with about 25k miles. Full service history and current NCT, one owner from new. A few minor dents but generally in great shape and like new inside. I'm thinking about €800, anyone care to put a value on it?

    I'd be thinking 7ish, how long is the NCT valid for?

    Depending on the condition, service history and the length of the NCT I would say to advertise it between €800-€1,250 :)

    16 year old micra with 25k miles and full service history means it was serviced on average every 1560 miles.
    Obviously possible, but hard to believe such car exists in Ireland.

    Yes, serviced every year, its also had about 5 sets of new tyres as the sidewalls were cracking due to lack of use, and its been taxed every day of its 16 years.

    As the others said, it depends mainly on how much NCT is left

    1 month left -> €600 (if you're lucky)
    15 months left -> try €1,100

    cant be 15 months on a 16 year old car

    If that's all true, and I was looking for such car, and there is no extensive rust on it, and general condition is very good, I'd be happy to pay higher price than average for it.

    Fact that it was taxed for every day of those 16 years doesn't change anything for me. If previous owner drove it for 16 years untaxed, car would be still the same good.

    Main thing is to make sure there is no extensive rust and that car is really in good technical condition.

    It can if you do it 3 months early. Then it isn't backdated

    Nothing is backdated. NCT is valid from moment the cert is issued till next due date.

    What he meant though was that car which is tested even 3 months early, has NCT only valid for 14 months and 29 days maximum, so it can never be full 15 months.

    500-650max with full nct.
    if crossmember is rusty........scrap value.

    Don't know how long the NCT has to run, if its within the 3 months early testing window it'll be put through, but they're keen to sell it as its not used (obviously!), and the insurance is due for renewal soon.

    I was only using the tax situation to illustrate the fact the the car has been kept roadworthy and in excellent condition throughout its life, regardless of cost. If it needed something, it got it!

    Ah jeysus stop being pedantic. Its valid for 12 months, but backdated to when it was due if the new test isn't in the next 3 months.
    And 14 months and 29 days.....really?

    I still can't see any connection between tax and keeping car roadworthy and in excellent condition.

    Bull****. If it was 150,000 miles, 9 owners, no service history and in rough shape it would still be worth €600 with a years+ NCT :rolleyes:

    Sorry but it's either you or me who don't understand the meaning of word "backdating".

    Do! An early test sends out a clear signal that the car is good and the seller is confident that it is good. A big green flag if you will.

    Good luck with the sale!

    Sure it can. If the anniversary of registration is 1st November, then + 12 months = November, +2 = Jan, + 29 days = March.

    November to following march = 15 months.

    It is you who understands the meaning of the word "backdating". It is also you who is as pedantic as it comes on the motors forum.

    Good luck to your cousin selling the car. Hope they get a good price for it. My jaw dropped when I saw the mileage. It's about 16 years too late at this stage. All in your cousin would have saved a bundle just using taxis.
    1000's lost to deflation, Annual servicing maybe €2k plus over the 15 years.
    Tax maybe the equilavlent of €3k-4k over the 15 years. Not sure of the rates over those years. Fuel cost would likely have been the least of their costs. They might have only had to fill up once every 6 months or so. Considering their usage of the car, They're saving will be a pretty penny. :D

    You might get strong enough money for that car.. maybe advertise at €1100 and take anything over €8-900.

    I've noticed lately that a lot of people seem to be massively under-estimating the value of cars and will assume that any car will only be worth scrap value or a couple of hundred quid just because it's old.

    I'd imagine the same people haven't actually been looking for a used car lately - there is a huge amount of absolute crap out there at the moment. I've recently been looking for starter cars for a family member and for my girlfriend (at around the €1500 bracket). If I had come across a clean one owner Micra with history and low mileage they would have had €900 or a grand in their hand before someone else took it.

    It's funny - a 15 year old Micra in 2007 would probably have been worth €400 because nobody wanted 'old' cars at the time and there was a glut of used cars on the market. Now a 15 year old Micra will probably go for double that because cheap and reliable is in demand again, and there's next to no supply in terms of decent used cars.

    Turns out theres only about 16k miles on it, NCT due in 2 months but its being booked in this week. If it gets advertised I'll suggest asking €1100 or so and accepting anything over €900. If its not gone in a week they can always lower the price.
