I'm trying to take an action photo of my dog....Is it shutter speed?

    Thanks.

You want a high shutter speed. Boost your ISO, open your aperture and select a shutter speed of 1/800 or higher.

I found it really hard to see the dog in this shot. So my advice would be firstly to choose a place with a more neutral background ( less distractions ) like all green grass or sandy beach etc. You don't say what type of gear you have, but if you can adjust shutter speed well then you can adjust that to suit how fast the dog jumps. Slow shutter will blur the acion, fast shutter to freeze it. Also you could move in close and "pan" move your camera with the dogs jump, this could result with the action frozen but the background blurred giving the perception of movement. Practice and change settings and take lots of shots and you're sure to get some nice photos.

I do have the ability to select shutter speed and I tried out 1/800 - worked brilliantly. I have a Canon powershot s90.

    Thanks.
