I'm currently insured on my the family car and the missus has been on it for a few months now since she got her learners permit. We've decided to buy a small car since I'm on the road with quiet alot. When we looked to insure her on a small 1.2 car, it was ~€1300+ online. I wondered if its possible for me to insure the second car and add her as a named driver on that also ? If so, do I leave my no claims with my existing car, doubt I could use it over 2 cars ? Thanks.. any recommendations on better prices for a provisional female driver > 30 by PM appreciated.

You're right, if you insure the second car yourself, you'll essentially have 0 NCB for that policy.

€1300 is more than a fair quote for someone on a LP.

Id be quite surprised if you insuring a second car with no NCB and adding a learner to the policy is going to work out a whole lot cheaper tbh. Ring around and see what you can get, especially from brokers who might be more use to you.

Just bear in mind that if you can find an insurer to mirror your NCB, it will mean that it is at risk on both cars (ie claim on either car and you will lose it on both policies).

I was going to do the same a year or two ago. I had a Mondeo with the missus as named driver and was going to get her insured as a named driver on a 1.4 rover. It was working out way cheaper to have her as the policy holder on the second car than it was for me. She has a learner permit as well.

Did you go with a policy for herself in the end or manage to get a second policy ?

If she does her drivers test and gets her full licence insurance will drop by a good bit especially if she's been a named driver on your policy. I'd put the money you'd spend on a second car and insurance towards the lessons and test then get her a car, personally

Then why does she have a licence... She's going to have do it eventually

Well I was hardly going to let her drive the car without a permit or insurance.
