    Hi all,

Somethign to get the ball rolling! Well I'm currently doing a masters in data mining, whats the job scene like in Ireland? Are there many companies doing this type of work?

I know Google,Facebook, LinkedIn are here but what about smaller companies?

    Good to know.

I've been working in IT for quite a while now just trying to figure out how to transition into this area and what skill's etc are suitable and hopefully not having to start completely from scratch!

Hi Vigos, those names mentioned are pretty big. But there are a huge amount of organisations investing internally in their Big Data capabilities.

    Hi Keith,

Good to know I guess its just a case of getting out there and looking. I'd probably prefer smaller companies starting off in this field reckon would get way more experience doing so too.

Offhand I remember browsing through an EMC brochure and they seem to be touting their expertese in Big Data. As well, a few job specs are looking for knowledge of Hadoop.

I believe Deloitte have an analytics team too.

The main skill I'd recommend developing is SQL. While I'd make use of LINQ and various other tools, the bulk of the work in BI still remains in getting and manipulating data into meaningful datasets to visualise.

    system/network admin

  • I'll be joining a multi-national in a couple of months in an entry level position in their analytics department, so I should be working as a data analyst on projects. Really looking forward to it but really not sure what to expect tbh. For people working in this area, how is career progression as you gain experience? Is there demand overseas (London/Aus/Canada)? Obviously I'll only have my foot in the door obviously but hoping in the coming years to make a good career out of it.
