it's too new to have any amazon ratings, but seems to be well received online and the amazon seller has a decent reputation, even though SSD's with jmicron controllers have (historically at least) been responsible for a lot of bad drives, the newest incarnation seems to have overcome that and I'm guessing the pricing is more to do with getting units out there and rebuilding their reputation than anything else.

Still, it's the cheapest 240gb SSD you'll find anywhere at the moment, by a considerable margin (:pac: waits for someone else to beat it!!).

it almost makes me wish i needed another one! :D

could be worth a punt anyway if you're in the market and if it turns out not to be reliable, amazon will refund without making too much fuss.

Good price although it seems to be one of the common Chinese ssds ala this.
    http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1475360867.html?tracelog=wwwdetail2mobilesitedetail

Judging by the shipping time it's probably being shipped from China too.

Also worth noting that the seller is not fulfilled by Amazon so Amazon will have nothing to do with a return. Could be hectic if it fails and you have to pay for postage to China to get it fixed.

Personally I'd spend the little extra and get one from a trusted brand like this. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00BQ8RM1A/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1399117024&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX110_SY165

the price is the UK sale price though and 7-15 days is still decent from china and with it being amazon you wouldn't have to worry about customs on it or anything like that, not to mention it's still considerably cheaper than aliexpress.

also, the refunds section directs you to amazons refund policy so i'm pretty sure you'd still have amazon's return protection, which i've never had any issues with, they're very accommodating when things don't go right.

    Available from Amazon for £99.

This one is at its lowest ever price and seems to be the best value of the recognised brands.

... Or buy the Samsung Evo , a superior product for £94.99

    Sustained Write: Up to 241MB/s
It seems it's cheap due to it's low write speed. The Crucial looks to also have a low write speed (also about 240MB/s). The Samsung above seems to have a decent write speed (551MB/s).

Thus the Samsung would probably be the best of the three.

Went for the Samsung Evo just now, but the 120GB version for €70+PM (they ship the 250 to Ireland, but not the 120 for some odd reason!). Well overdue to get and SSD for my desktop. Have one in the lappy for work and there's some difference!

Gotta find a nice CPU+RAM+MOBO bundle next and I'll be laughing, but this was on my list a while now!

    Cheers for the advice guys!

Why would you not have to pay customs? If its coming from China you are liable for customs surely?

551MB/s? Where does that figure come from? The M500 keeps up with the Evo in random writes. The evo is not getting the maximum write speeds until you get the 500GB drive and even then, 550MB/s would have to be an especially ideal situation.
Not saying that the Evo isn't worth buying, but don't believe everything you see in quoted specs - they are trying to sell their product after all.

@monotype, Tomshardware benchmark all the major drives with the latest firmware on a standard system and give figures monthly. the evo is a lot faster in practice(http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269-3.html).
Had the last gen 840, and pre firmware latee last year it was comparable to the m500 but not any more.

Trust the test numbers and then decide what price point you like. Tom's maintain a value proposition for every model too. and update all guides monthly. the samsung has never cost this little it was 100gbp last week and 110 2 months ago. Definitely the best value. its worst performance is minimum 10% higher write and 37% higher read, random, than m500 in the 250 gig size.

Pretty sure I took them from here. Forgot about TomsHardware at the time :/

Ah yeah, not saying the Evo isn't a faster drive as a whole, or a good buy, but I would be careful about figures applying to only some situations. Looks like the firmware updates have made a big difference though, really pulls it ahead in several results.

If you are going for a lower budget drive, I wouldn't discount the M500 - e.g., in favour of lower capacities, but the Evo is the one to go for if you can fork out that extra cash.

because when it's coming through amazon, all charges are included in the price. regardless of what it is, or where in the world it's coming from originally, the advertised amazon price is the full price inc. any taxes and charges.

People should check which version their Sata is. My laptop can't write the full Speed my ssd supports because its only 3gb/s

exactly, if you've got a laptop or desktop that's more than a couple of years old that could do with speeding up but won't support 6gb/s sata it'll be ideal.

Its not coming through amazon though, its a third party seller, which is more like ebay than amazon. It doesnt matter that Amazon are based in europe, it only matters where the good is coming from (in this case, Hong Kong).

Saying that. The seller says that all prices include vat:

"Emgreat (Shipping time 7-15 days) Tax Information

Prices are displayed inclusive of any applicable VAT."

But I would not be surprised if you got hit with customs on this.

    Morning all,
Just got a SMS from DHL. Payment of £15 required to release the item, its duty and VAT being levied by the UK. Online payment wont go through as they insist on a post code so had to call the UK number to get it processed. Just got an email receipt from them and package on its way.

Would it do much for this laptop> Samsung RC 520

    Or should I buy a tab ?

    Thanks

    Morning all,
Contacted seller via Amazon. Outlined the problem of the extra £15 for duty & vat and he immediately refunded the £15. Cannot quibble with that kind of service. Have yet to get the change to fire up the SSD, hope to do that next week-end

you have no idea how much better that makes me feel knowing you didn't lose out in the end, although come to think of it, it's your money so you probably do in fairness! :D

glad you got it sorted though, although they have put the price up to £94.12 (in which case, for the same money i'd be buying the samsung evo) now, so I'm guessing they got a slap off amazon for not including the import costs in their price. :)
