Tractor problem

Right guys not the most mechanical minded so bear with me on the terminology.

Was going to do a job this evening but when I turned on the tractor I heard a noise with the fan . When I investigated it I saw that the fan was loose where it sits on the shaft that drives it. Then I checked it for water and saw there was none in it. The father had been doing a bit of rolling earlier in the week and never checked.

Where is the fan shaft tighten from. I can't access the front of it without taking off the radiator. Would it be likely that it just came loose or would there be a bit more damage done. Tractor is a mf 362.

Water Pump. Common failure. Not big money (assuming no overheating damage done)

Sounds like water pump alright. Don't run the tractor untill it's sorted. You'll damage the engine from over-heating.

Yep have it parked up but hopefully no damage done already as the father had it out rolling for a few hours last week. Very surprised he didn't check it for water. Well we all make mistakes. Worse could happen.

Water pump failure. Not too expensive to replace and relatively easy to do your self if you have the tools.

Well got a mechanic to do as I didn't have the time with work to do and I wasn't 100 confident doing it myself.

Fceking cost 300. He was 4 hrs doing it. At least it's done as I need tractor in morning but didn't expect to be paying that but at least it's done right.

See attached, water pump would have cost around €70, so circa €60 an hour for labour. Think I should have been a mechanic !

In fairness to mechanics, particularly those with decent setup they have costs to cover..

I know my local independent has his rates and insurance which are huge bills before one car comes across the threshold... He has splashed out on a raft of diagnosis systems, laser alignment and such like that all has to be included in the hourly rate.. He charges €40 an hour before vat and to be honest I think its fair enough. €60 might be a bit steep, but maybe thats main dealer charges !
Last place I was contracted into for maintenance were being charged €60 an hour +vat.. I was getting €25 of that!

I do most of the work here on my own machinery. It saves me money but takes up a lot of time. Bought 4 different oil seals yesterday that have to be fitted. Reckon about 10 hours work. Seals cost €70.

+1, I seem to spend a fair bit of time with oily hands particularly over the summer. Saves a few bob and to be honest I like maintaining and fixing things myself.
