Ferry to France with old Passport?

I just got an offer of work in France today, a day before the long weekend, with the ferry to France leaving on Wednesday. My passport is out of date, and the Passport Office have said it's not possible to get a new one before I am meant to depart. My question is- as a passenger in a van, will my passport definitely be checked or do people tend to get waived through? The route is Rosslare-Roscoff. Has anyone recently travelled this route and were you checked or waived through? Any advice much appreciated.

We were checked when we pulled into the port on the Rosslare side going toward Roscoff.

Passports will be checked in Rosslare by Irish Ferries staff and will almost certainly be checked by French Police in Roscoff. Would not advise travelling on an expired passport for this one. Travelled this route last summer.

Thanks for the info guys. I got speaking to a supervisor in the passport office afterwards who said I should try my luck on Tuesday at the office, they might be able to help me. She seemed to be hinting they would sort me out without saying it, hopefully..
