I posted here a few weeks back about windows and we decided on a supplier finally.

Only problem is, I was trying to reach them all week, no answer on mobiles, landlines or email. When I rang the head office yesterday finally I was told, "ya, that branch is closed"..

I'm a bit wary to say the least now, they are a nationwide company but how they can just close a branch so suddenly, there wasn't even a message on the voicemail saying to contact another number, I'm just a bit worried about handing over a large deposit. What if something else goes on & company suddenly liquidated???

No naming names, but, does the company begin with 'S' and end with 'R'?

If so, the 'branches' are not branches under the umbrella of the main company, they are (financially and legally) independent agents of the main company.

Advice I always give people, when they have to pay deposits, is pay by credit card...that way, if things go belly up, you have a pretty good chance of getting your money back.

Yup you'd be right, thought it was so strange..So if we do pay by credit card and things go wrong how would we get our deposit back? I'm wondering too do we have any leeway in asking them to take a smaller deposit in the circumstances..

I've been looking on the web and there's nothing about the company being in trouble but then we were almost caught with a builder back in the day, bought off the plans, put down a deposit but something didn't sound right and I heard some Chinese whispers - luckily asked for our cheque back, sure enough they went belly up and a friend of mine was caught with solicitors etc trying to get money back.

Maybe I'm worrying for nothing, but it's a lot of money & don't want to get burned
