currently doing Diploma in Legal Studies and Practise. Getting good enough results and absolutely love it, even though it is stressful. I am just wondering if anyone has any advice on how I will go about getting a job out of it? Any job I have seen has expressed the candidate should have at least two years experience.
The best approach would be to complete the Dip. in Legal Studies and then apply to various legal firms. If you had a particular aspect of law which you like e.g criminal, family then maybe concentrate on the firms that specialise in those. Also of course it would be useful if you have the usual computer skills and maybe a legal secretary course completed.
I know a number of "legal eagles" who started their career that way and then went on to be a solicitor or barrister. It's a lot of work but worth it in the long run

If you're in Dublin and going down the private college route GCD offer a 1 year ILEX with entry to 2nd year degree if you then want. I will declare that I have some interest with GCD however.
hey im doing the Griffith college course. ILLEX. its a brilliant course which can be done over one or two years. It is very hard going though, especially if you are doing it in a year like myself. but I would recommend it to anyone.
I did the ILEX over two years a few years ago now. I already had the legal secretarial diploma and was working as a secretary in a local authority law department. After a few years I got a job as a legal assistant specialising in conveyancing. I would say your best route would be get experience as a secretary and learn as much as you can in your interest area and then go for legal exec role. The ILEX course is very practical but no one can really teach you how to run a file from start to finish in a classroom, the truth is with legal work you only really learn by doing and that is why experience is so important. It is a more practical approach but the same theory is there in the course as well, its just not in as much detail. If you have a Law Degree I don't think this course will be of any benefit to you. You would be better off chasing an internship or going the secretarial route to get experience than doing the IILEX course. As a secretary you will learn how to run a particular type of file , say a house purchase or debt collection just by observing your fee earner over time.
