    Hi All

Having a problem with my car (Audi A4 tdi 130bhp 2002) .Temperature dial in the car is only reaching 60 at the most when it should be up to 90 after a good drive . Mpg is normally around 45 to 50 , i have heat coming from the heaters in the car . Just wondering what could be causing this , from reading other posts i see a lot of thermostat and coolant temperature sensor's causing similar problems . Should both be changed for the sake of ruling both out ?
The Temperature dial does move a little when car starts to heat up so i don't think its a broken dial . Car drives fine other than that !

    Any advice welcome
    Cheers

Does the temp gauge fluctuate when driving? If so your coolant temp sensor is knackered. But as you are saying the temp gauge only reaches 60, I'd say you need a new thermostat. Make sure you buy genuine.

No it doesn't fluctuate , it goes up to 60 degrees and not any further even after well over an hour of driving

I'd try the thermostat first easy to change once you can find it!

So thermostat changed out . Bought new thermostat and o-ring and coolant from Audi . Cost just under € 60 for the lot . Took about an hour with a size 10 socket wrench and a lot of fiddling about . Did not have to remove anything else . Alternator was a bit of a dose to get around . Was a bit messy too with all the coolant coming out . But job done !! After a good bit of coolant topping up and unblocking the air lock took the car for a spin and temperature reached 90 degrees and stayed at 90 !!!
    Thanks for the advice !

Try www.camskill.co.uk. They have been the cheapest for the last few years when I've needed tyres.

Got 4 new tyres for 80 euro each , the brand is infinity , have to say so far i am very happy with them , good grip wet and dry and for 18" alloys they are good and quiet too , very little road noise .

    Glad your problem is fixed.

While the thread is here, it is worth mentioning that at least on older 1.9TDIs to the OP, the coolant temp sensor which was mentioned earlier is notorious for failing and giving bad readings on the internal dash temp gauge.

My symptoms were not fluctuations, just a low reading like the OP and a cold starting issue in the Winter as the glow plugs were not working as they should have.

VAG sorted the issue with the sensors and the replacement units are either blue or green, depending on the engine. AFAIK, the original faulty ones are black - but do some extra Googling on that.

have any of u guys had a clutch go I'm audi a4 . Think mine went today . Went to change from 2nd to 3rd and when I pushed in the clutch it just hit the floor and didn't come back up . It's gone to the mechanic now but just wondering if it could be anything other than the clutch

    Cheers !

It may not be your clutch. The pedal may have broken. There's a part on it that pushes the piston in and this may have snapped. It happened to me a few months ago on a mark 4 golf. A new pedal maybe called for here

So the problem was the clutch cylinder ( a small cylinder down behind the clutch peddle) happy days , gonna be a lot cheaper to fix
