I'm looking to get an external battery/powerpack to extend the battery life of a Garmin Edge 800 . Has anyone any experience or recommendations. I seem to remember that there was a thread on this a while ago but I am not having any luck finding it.

    thanks

I think it may have been discussed in one of the Audax threads - not in a thread of it's own.

Something like this will charge your gps, phone etc. One of the audax guys went the extra mile of waterproofing both ends of the connection for poor weather, with whatever your favourite silicon sealant is.

I use an AA battery usb external battery pack with 4 rechargeable AA batteries. Kept my smartphone active while tracking a 24 hour spin recently...

If you feel like generating your own power, this is a neat option:

Thanks for the replies I think I will go with the 4AA battery one as its only for an emergency backup and may never be used. I like the idea that you can put ordinary batteries in it.

I've used this Gomadic http://www.gomadic.com/battery-backup-cat.html for a lot of Audax events including London Edinburgh London and it has worked perfectly. It is very light, compact, and as above it takes 4 standard AA's. On a very wet day I stick it in a zip bag with a bit of tape around it to keep out the damp. It charges in the background, and you can continue to navigate at the same time. It fits neatly in a small top tube bag, with room for a couple of snacks as well. On the Fleche last week I couldn't find my top tube bag so I just taped the Gomadic to the top tube. I used my Garmin's internal battery for the first 180km or so. Then when I got the "battery low" warning I switched on the Gomadic. When I finished the 375km route the Garmin was back up to full charge again, and there was still life in the Gomadic. And it's very cheap ...
    Cheers, LG
