LPT Local property tax arrears letter from Revenue

    Today I have received a letter from the Revenue asking me to pay 200 euro in arrears for my (only) house (purchased 14 years ago). I am in band 2, I already paid 1/2 year in 2013 (112 euro) and again 225 euro in 2014. I do not understand why should I pay 'arrears' if the taxation started in 2013??

    Its more than likely the Household charge 2012 the letter refers to , and not Local Property tax .

    See another thread here on the same subject

    Household Charge arrears collection has moved to the LPT.

    The Household Charge at the time (2012) was a flat fee of €100. Unpaid Household Charges then increased to €200.

    It's unlikely you can get away with not paying, and if you ever go to sell your house in future the purchaser's solicitor will insist on receipts to show that there are no LPT or HHC arrears outstanding before allowing their client to purchase.

    Best to clear it now before Revenue decide to increase it! If you have log in details for your LPT the HHC arrears should now be shown under 'Property History' when you log in.

    Thank you for clarifying this. The letter masthead in fact says "Household Charge Arrears (Local Property Tax)". I must be very naive but to be honest I did not/do not know what a "Household Charge" was/is, in fact this is the first time I hear about it! I believed that there was no property tax in Ireland until 2013 and have never received a request to pay any property taxes (either HC or LPT) before 2013.

    I'm not 100% sure but from memory I seem to recall it was mandatory to self-register. That must have been the easiest way for them to set it up at the time. And as it's a tax on the property, not the person, they were always going to be able to collect arrears for unregistered properties.

    2012 = Household Charge 100 euro flat tax

    2013 = half year LPT

    2014 = full-year LPT

    Thank you everybody I really did not know that. I asked my neighbours but no one in my area pays the property tax so nobody had clue :)

    I genuinely don't understand how people couldn't know about the HHC.

    Now, I read the newspapers daily, and listen to radio news daily.

    I listen to the annual Budget speech.

    So, ok, not everybody is like me (thankfully!!).

    But still, the coverage of the HHC was so widespread.

    OK, if you are aged 18-25, maybe a tenant, ok I wouldn't expect people to know.

    But I would expect homeowners to know about it.

    Or maybe I'm odd.
