The county council have demanded that wexford general repair the roof of the old hospital which was used mainly for surgery for the entire wexford county, which has since been closed down in 1990. The fix will cost 1-2 MILLION euro, which will have to be taken from the HSEs building fund, money which could be used to fix up the current hospital. Why don't they knock it down, sure? Well because it's listed as a national landmark and is therefore exempt from demolishment.

Why don't they just sell it ?

Even if they only sold it for a euro it would save them a couple of million in repair costs and some private buyer could turn it into something useful.

Having said that, I don't know where abouts the building is and what potential it may have.

But it would be a shame to let it fall into disrepair if it is a protected building.

I'm prepared to forego my kidney stone operation so that the roof of the ghost hospital can be repaired......

Are you prepared to be in the care of semi professional interns who don't the right equipment because the government chose to protect a hospital that hasn't been used in 25 years?

Be that as it may, using funds that can upgrade the hospital that's used now, as opposed to a hospital that hadn't been touched in over 20 years, is ridiculous. Yes, they should sell it, but if it's been demanded for repairs, the buyer would need the money to fix it the roof, and not many would be interested, really.

Depends.......... are we talking slates or torch-on felt here?

But when those rules interfere with the quality of care the hospital can offer, the rule should be voided. Obviously a landmark like it, would be a loss to the county but I'd rather lose a building than have a hospital lose lives because it wasted money that could've been used to upgrade their potential care system.

Why didn't the HSE hand it over to the OPW like many another national monument? Probably due to their own inefficiency. Sure if we just ignore the problem, it'll go away, seems to be the prevailing attitude.
