New Pixies album - "Indie Cindy"

And it sounds absolutely sh*ite. Why? The production. The whole thing has been mastered so loud, using that brick walling technique, there are no dynamics, no clarity between instruments, the whole thing is just a mush, the snare drum is just a dull thud and the guitars are distorting where they shouldn't be.

It reminds me of "Death Magnetic" or the STP 'comeback' album from a few years back. Truly awful.

I can't even comment on the quality of the songs as listening to it hurts my ears so much.

didn't think it was that bad - it was produced by Gil Norton who did their previous 3 albums

song wise, its like a decent Frank Black album, or a collection of lost b-sides, which is still pretty good

Well its really more the mastering, that's the issue - where everything is mastered to the same level and there no space. Pixies albums were always very spacious - listen to Surfer Rosa!

to be honest it doesn't even sound like a Gil Norton production - I never rated him as a producer anyway. His sound was always too tinny.

Its the only decent sounding one.

I listened to it again today, about 3 songs I liked, I had to turn it off at about song 9. :( And this is from a huge Pixies fan, saw them live in 1990, like the first few Frank Black albums too... this is just a major let down.

Massive fan, yet to hear it. I was kind of hoping they wouldn't make a new album, didn't want them to ruin a perfect score card.
If the songs are good I can live with loud mastering. I have a feeling it will be okay at best.

BTW is that CD or Vinyl your listening to?

I'm a huge Pixies fan but I've no real urge to waste my time listening to this new album. I've already heard EP1 and EP2 anyway and was very disappointed with them.

CD. It sounded better in the car then it did on headphones. It does sound awful man. Remember that amazing drum sound on Surfer Rosa? Or even the nice tight, crisp sound of Bossanova? Nowhere to be found on this. Everything is just rammed up into the red so there's no room for anything at all. The guitars just mush into one. Can hardly hear the vocals. The drums are just anonymous in the background, it could be a drum machine for all you can tell.

Having said that, as songs I quite liked Indie Cindy, Blue Eyed Hexe, and Greens And Blues. Magdalena 318 was OK too. Silver Snail however was awful, and Ring The Bell and Another Toe In The Ocean are both terrible songs, never mind the production. Haven't really gotten any further.

If this was a Frank Black album, it would be passable but not up there with his best (his first two solo albums are great). But its not. Its (supposed to be) the Pixies.

I think it's pretty decent as it goes! 6/10 anyway.

Really liking this, was a bit apprehensive since it's been so long since they released anything but like it so far

It sounds a bit crap alright.

The album is f**ing brilliant...haven't had it out of the car to notice the mastering.

I like the album, some great moments on it. Snakes, bagboy, what goes boom, Madgelina 316 and Indie Cindy all would fit in perfectly to a classic Pixies set, looking forward to seeing them in Marlay park on Sunday.

I thought it was decent too. My 11 yo keeps asking to hear greens and blues. And if music can transcend to different generations, well it must be good stuff. If this was an album by some new band it would probably be getting some traction.
Unfortunately they are competing against their own back catalogue which is legendary.

Sounds like they did a metallica on the bass, but still on constant rotation in my house....snakes is a great tune alright!

getting a "a-house" vibe off bagboy!

to be honest i think you are about 5 years behind....brick walling is a sad reality nowadays....but if that's your review of the album, i wouldn't have bothered....
