Ok, so really I should know this one. But here we go.

So, Par 3 (16th a Knightsbrook), hit it right of the green, it crosses the water hazard comfortably but unfortunately bounces back into the water. Its yellow stakes.

I find my ball in the water. the line of the hazard has high reeds all around it. So when I drop it on the point where it crossed, I have no backswing at all. I cant bring the ball forward (as that would be closer to the hole) but I can go sideways, but I will always have the reeds in my back swing.

    So, what were my options?

Play your shot from where you played it originally (off the tee)

Well one of them is to re-tee anyhow...

For yellow you have to drop keeping a straight line between point of entry and the flag.
Is it not possiable to move back in a straight line between the point of entry and the flag untill the reeds are no longer a problem.

Drop tee side of the hazard keeping the point of entry in line with the flag is surely another option

    Water Hazards (Rule 26)

If your ball is in a water hazard (yellow stakes and/or lines) you may play the ball as it lies or, under penalty of one stroke:

play a ball from where your last shot was played, or
drop a ball any distance behind the water hazard keeping a straight line between the hole, the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard and the spot on which the ball is dropped.

If your ball is in a lateral water hazard (red stakes and/or lines), in addition to the options for a ball in a water hazard (see above), under penalty of one stroke, you may drop within two club-lengths of, and not nearer the hole than:

the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, or
a point on the opposite side of the hazard equidistant to the hole from the point where the ball last crossed the margin.

sorry yes, I knew about the options of:
    1. Replaying from tee
    2. dropping in line with flag on the tee shot side of the water

but both would have been 150 yard shots + instead of a 15 yard chip!

Problem is where can I drop on the other side of the hazard.
Do I go to nearest point of relief? What constitutes nearest point of relief no nearer the hole. If my swing is curtailed by the hazard, surely thats not nearest point of relief, is it?

There is no nearest point of relief from a hazard you choose one of the 3 options (or 5 options in the case of a lateral) and make your drop. It is like being anywhere else on the course if your swing is impeded after you drop then tough totty.

    thanks for all the replies.

so basically my only option on the other side of the lake (remembering that I cleared the lake by 20 yards) is to drop at the exact point where it entered the hazard from the other side?

I dont have two club lengths no nearer the hole, do I?

And for the drop itself, do I place a tee, right on the line of the hazard and drop it there?

You really shouldnt have a drop at point of entry unless the lake is in front of the green.
it seems the lake is to the right of the green you clear the lake and then bounce back in so you have to go to where the ball enter the lake and go directly back keep that point in line with the flag.

The digaram above is for a red water hazard.

You have only the first 3 options from the list above for yellow stakes. You can't drop on the green side even if it first cleared the hazard before falling back into the hazard, for yellow stakes.

is there by any chance a drop zone?

    are you sure about this?

Also, yes the lake is in front of the green and to the right. there is a fairly steep incline down to it and if you get a bad hop, you can end up in the water, as I did.

What Ben is saying is that I have to replay the shot from the tee or from the line back to the flag (which will be beside the ladies tee). And I'm not so sure that is correct.
