Cassette lock ring

I bought a bike last night without wheels, so was given the cassette separately.
I've just noticed there's no lock ring plate in front of the 12t ring.
Do I need this before I fit wheels?
    It's a 2007 bike with ultegra components.
I've googled images of 2007 cassettes and they all have a lock ring.

    I've attached image
    Thanks

Have you even got the full 10 speed Cassette there? I can't count 10 cogs but it could be the picture :) And yes the lockring comes with the cassette and you will need to get one to fit the Cassette to the Freehub.

    Thanks, that's what I thought.
Yes deffo 10 cogs, I've just cleaned black grime off all of them.
    Photo wasn't great sorry.

It's an unusual cassette with 3 black spacers, 18t is attached to 19t and 21t is attached to 25t, which is why I thought there might be a slim chance there was no lock ring and that was ok.

Ok, I will have to hope the guy has the lock ring and meet up with him again.
    Thanks.

Actually I have an old lock ring in the shed from a shimano 8 speed.

Can I use that or do I have to have a 10 speed lockring for a 10 speed cassette?

Should there be more than three spacers? The last cassette I fitted (2013 105 10 speed) had one between each cog, apart from the first three or four which were rivetted together? I think seven spacers in all

You're right, there's 4 black spacers and a metal one between 18/19 and 21/23 (just counted the teeth on the last cog and there's only a 23, not 25).

    Bollix.

It was sold as an 11/25, turns out it's a 12/23.

You should have one spacer between the large cog and the freewheel base at the hub. This cog should have two smaller cogs joined as a three piece unit. Then there are a series of back spacers between the next 4 cogs, descending in size - then the smallest three have a sort of lip/ spacer built in. Finally, there is a spacer and lock ring to fit with the cassette tool.

Only ordered the cassette / chain yesterday afternoon from Swim Cycle Run, 24 hours later, free postage, delivered to my workplace, with lockring:

They had sold out of 10 speed Tiagra / 105 chains, so I had to buy the Ultegra.
