    Hi all
Have been hitting balls in the range lately. Was out for 9 holes this evening and on average my shots were traveling 30 yards further than the range. Are the balls in the range that much different or is the distance markers in metres?

The range balls aren't great and will generally travel less and drop off faster. I'm pretty confident the markers are in yards and they've been recently checked/assessed.

Can be windy at that range too I find.

Range balls are awful. Some of them are distance controlled from the start, but they just get manhandled and beat up in their lives regardless. I've seen range balls do some things in the air that just make you laugh: moving 2 or 3 directions in the same shot, looking like the atmosphere is nonexistent past about 100 yards and just dropping, etc.

Back home we have a range and I don't even watch how the balls end there because they are so bad their flight path isn't in any way indicative of the strike. I just base it off of the feel of the shot and how it reacts for the first 50 yards or so (club dependent).

Range balls are designed not to travell as far as a game ball and also if your not standing exactly where the distances(yards) were measured from there all going to be different. Their really only a rough guide and target. Best thing is to have a range finder. Its the only way of knowing distances for sure.

With the range balls being washed every day the dimples get worn down which results in poor flight path and also early drop offs i.e. reduced distance. Ive seen some do an S shape in the air then nose dive.

Must get up there. Any driving range I have ever been to here has always been wrong in their distance markers. For a start it is never confirmed whether its yards or metres. They rarely have multiple markers across the range. So if you drive from the last bay there is no way of knowing your distance compared to driving from the middle bay. The balls are crap. In short a driving range should only be used as a warm-up area. Forget about calibrating for distance.

Celbridge driving range is built in an arc which makes it harder to get correct markers and also it sits at a funny angle to the land. If you walk to the end bay and look up the outside markers yoi will see what direction it runs. It will look completely differant to what your eyes are telling you from any other bay

I have a load of range balls and when I bring them out with anything up to a 7iron the distance loss is negligible compared with a new ball, the odd time the range ball is the furthest

They aren't designed to be shorter, just the cracks and worn dimples effect the distance.

They come in all different % compression as to a game ball for distance. Something to do with the size of the range their intended for. Like as one im a city thats shorter than one in the country that has more space.

    Edit..
Dont get me wrong, some guys can hit them just as far but as for being like for like their not meant to be. One piece are just crap, two piece are on a par but just not as good as match balls.ive been told circa 10% is the differance
