With all the talk about Irish water recently, the broadcasting charge seems to have vanished from the headlines. Will it really come in on January 1st next year ?

According to a Dáil reply from early April the publication of the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill is imminent.

The Bill amends the Broadcasting Act 2009 to remove the Television Licence fee provisions and introduce the means of collecting a Broadcasting Charge and to implement the Government decision relating to the BAI 5 year review of public funding.

The Bill was to be published before Easter but has yet to be approved by Cabinet.

The Oireachtas Transport and Communication committee were meeting with representatives from Irish TV; CRAOL (Irish Community Radio Movement); and Dublin Community TV today on the implications of the proposed new broadcasting charge and related issues of concern for community broadcasters.
