Toyota Avensis 02 - are multiple issues related?

I recently purchased a Toyota Avensis 02 Diesel D4D, and all seemed fine with it when I drove it and checked it over.

On Monday, I heard a squeaking noise on start up from the engine, which I assumed was the fan belt. Purchased fan belt, was going to replace over bank holiday weekend.

Driving it this morning, it started to lose power when going up in gear. This might tie in with slipping fan belt/alternator?

There is also a big jet of smoke coming from the exhaust which started yesterday too.

2 things...1, I have the worst luck with cars regardless of what I have or how well I look after them!!

2, when fan belt went in my old Passat I had to replace tensioner at the same time which was pretty costly. Will this again be the case or could it just be the belt?

Colour of smoke jet from exhaust is grey, not sure if that indicates anything.

jet of grey smoke from exhaust could be oil burning
    check oil and coolant levels

    I be suspicious of turbo
take off the air input to turbo and check turbo spindle by hand for play. The turbo fins should spin freely by hand and be undamaged The spindle should have no play either side to side or in and out. A little oil in there is not unusual but a lot of oil would indicate turbo seals faulty.

I don't think the belt is related to the smoke and lack of power

Might have a turbo issue loss of power

might be down to the airflow meter is any lights coming on in the dash when loss of power happens

Great, thanks for that. Will check this at the weekend. Definately noticed the power issue more this morning. If the seals are faulty, would it be an expesive job to fix or is something a general diy-er could do.

Its possible to rebuild turbos and there is kits available but for most its easier to replace the turbo.

The toyota turbos are well made so you might pick one up in a brakers cheap. A reconditioned probably 300 euro or cheaper. Its a popular car so ebay might have them even cheaper.

If you do replace turbo get all new gaskets
While it is DIY do able the bolts on manifold will be rusted and could snap making it more difficult.

If your unsure get a mechanic to diagnose fault and give you price for replacing if needed.

300??? Jesus Christ...I'm having palpations here! And replacing gaskets will cost extra! Not what I needed to hear

I would have thought 300 would have been cheap for a turbo, I suppose relative to the cost of the vehicle it's a lot but if 300 bothers you stear clear of modern diesels!

Think I should stay away from cars altogether! Going to drop it in to mechanic...will see what Is to be done.

Best make sure it really needs turbo as it probably cost you same again in labour.

Spent a few weeks trying to sort this problem out...I replaced the air flow meter (which the first diagnostic error code indicated). Didnt fix the problem. Cleaned out the EGR valve, didnt fix the problem. I am 200 quid down at this stage! Got it diagnosed again, and this time the error code brought up that the issue is a diesel pump malfunction.

Without doing further tests (he recommended going to a fuel pump specialist) there is not way of knowing if its the pump, injectors etc which would probably cost a fortune.

Bought the avensis on the bit let over on car loan for family car so its practiaclly worth nothing now after a few weeks of driving.

I read this thread (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=72410066) so might get the actual code of the mechanic, would probably chance throwing one last bit of money at it
