An incident this morning were the key was left in the door on the inside of the door and the door couldn't be opened from the outside. Is there a way to install a thumb lock on the inside for a diyer so the same thing can't happen?

Yes, it is a pet hate of mine.
I imagined being locked in at night during a fire with the keys lost so I changed the locks when we moved in to the 'thumb lock' kind.

You can replace the barrels with key on one side and thumb thing on the other, local locksmith.

If you decide to change the lock then go for a decent anti-snap one. Available in locksmiths.
