Dark Skies near Kildare?

I'm stuck in a town with loads of lights and I really want to venture somewhere dark with my telescope but don't know of anywhere. I know there is the Curragh but I don't find up there safe and find there's a lot of light pollution from nearby towns and the motorway. Also I'm a wuss and any random noise sends me scurrying…

Try http://www.tullamoreastronomy.com/.
They are nearby(ish) and have a site on the outskirts of Tullamore where they organize observing.

The Dublin Stargazers organize observing in various locations mostly near the Sugarloaf so might be a bit too far away for you.
