A small guide to LPG Conversions

With the rise of LPG interest, I've decided that it would be a good idea to do a small guide to LPG conversions.

    What is LPG?
LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas – a very versatile, portable and manageable fuel that’s a naturally occurring byproduct of the oil extraction process. This product can also be used in cars that have a conversion kit fitted to them.

    Can I use LPG?
If you own a petrol powered car, then in most instances you can. It is however hard to convert direct injection petrol powered cars and therefore, it may not be possible to convert your car unless there's a specific LPG conversion kit dedicated for your model.
If you own a diesel-powered car it's impossible / not economically superior to convert your car.

What is the advantage of switching to LPG?
First of all - costs. The cost of one litre of LPG is almost half of what it is for Petrol. Second, your harmful gas emissions will be lower since LPG burns a bit cleaner than Petrol or Diesel.

Any disadvantages of switching to LPG?
Probably only a single one - conversion cost.

Will LPG affect the performance of the engine or my fuel economy?
It won't affect performance, especially with the new 4th/5th gen conversions. Fuel economy is impacted a little bit. Your car's fuel economy might decrease by around 10-20%, depending on the engine and quality of the conversion.

Where can I get my car converted to LPG?
You should search locally, however this list covers some of the more known places:

    Dublin
    www.lpgain.ie
    www.apservice.ie

    Kildare
    www.lpg.ie

    Cork

Really considering getting this done to the S60. Met a guy with the same car recently and he swears by it. Only issue is there are only 2 LPG suppliers in Limerick!

Would you mind listing them? I'm sure a moderator will attach them to the first post.

There are advantages to LPG but I don't believe it doesn't impact preformance nor that the fuel efficency is only 10 to 20% less than petrol.

Using a friend's car as an example.
    1994 Mercedes C180

    Petrol Usage: 8.7l/100km
    LPG usage: 10.1l/100km

    1.4l increase which is a 16% increase.

    STAG300 system.
