I have a small one roomed apt where storage heater needs replacing. There is an open fire. As heating is mostly needed in the evening time what is d most economical type of heater?

There are very good efficient electric heaters on the market now.

You should talk to a good electrical contractor who has experience in this field.

Depending on your location i could pm you one or go to the electrical forum and ask there.

Make sure there RECI or SAFEELECTRIC registered.

All electric heaters (even the old one or two bar type) have almost 100% efficiency. So from that point they are all the same. The difference will be in how quick they can bring the room up to comfortable temperature, timer controls and temperature controls. You could also add appearance to that. But for a given room temperature you will use less energy if it is properly controlled because temperature and time on will be automatically adjusted. Even the cheapest one if turned off when not needed or when room is up to comfortable temperature will be no more expensive to use than a fancy one.
