    Hi Guys

Flying from Dub with EI on Friday morning to Castletown in IOM. I understand that we'll be flying with Aer Aranm? Will this be a small plane and has anyone done this flight. Hoping to have a clear morning and a good view.

    Thanks in advance

You'll be on an ATR72. Twin prop.

Never flown on one before so thanks. Are they noisy in the cabin?

Yes you'll be flying with Aer Arann. It will be on an ATR 72-200 aircraft. Flight time is generally 25 to 30 minutes.

    It will be noisy.

Not too bad if you sit in front of the props. Best view from there too.

It will probably be a ATR 42, the 72''s don't operate that route very often.

They do now, RE are short of 42's

As far as I know (and from limited experience of flying on them twice), it's the other way around, i.e. front is very noisy, but towards the end (where I was when I flew on them on EI to Edinburgh) is less noisy.

MuffinsDa you are right ahead of the props is far noiser than behind. I was blasted out of it one night coming back from Glasgow! But I don't mind a bit of turboprop music!

Is there assigned seating with Aer Arann or if not would it be worthwhile getting on the plane first to get a seat at the back. Anyone ever flew into Castletown? I am imagineing that it's a small airport like Knock maybe?

    I do it twice a week. It's a turboprop, 25 / 30 minutes in the air.

Not particularly loud. Easy to sleep / listen to music / whatever.

It is almost always EI-BYO or more frequently EI-CBK.

Has EI-BYO been repaired after its wheel collapse?

Yes assigned seating at check in (or you can prebook on aerlingus website).

As above, I do this route most Mondays. Small little airport. Best view usually left (King Billy's school) but depending on wind I would aim for right as can get spectacular view of coastline.

Plenty of taxis, quick luggage, no passport control or customs. ATM. Any questions, let me know.

Note; gate changes regularly. Sometimes 406, sometimes 307/304.

They are a loooong way apart, so check the boards.

Haven't seen it in a while, that might explain it. What happened?

turbo props are always a great experience. Always feel like i should be wearing a silk scarf and goggles. Much more fun that jets.

From my experience sitting aft of both engines gives a much quieter experience, the last time I sat in the front rows after full power was applied I literally thought I had a perforated eardrum. :pac:

Still laid up in SNN I do believe. Only EI-EHH and CBK left '42 wise (I do believe EI-CPT is gone away and will only return in the form of coke cans etc!!)

Flew it once landing was an experience and a half pilot got her down lovely thought Isle of man is a lovely spot get a bus from the airport WAY cheaper than a taxi especially if your staying in douglas.

I was at the back so it was fairly quiet got free orange juice or water in them days as well not sure if they still do ?

Maybe - maybe not. It's quicker than a Dublin Bus trip from Tallaght to the city centre.

There's one cabin crew on the 42s, don't think there's hot food but you should be able to get a cuppa.

Also because they're so trim sensitive the assigned seating is quite important for take off and landing, so you might be best picking online to get the seat you want

    Yes

I like flying turboprops, its a much different experience in those kind of planes compared to jets, you'll notice the sound changes when they change the pitch of the props. I do sometimes struggle with the seats on ATRs and Dash-8s but usually its a very short flight.

Down here they're used a lot on the regional routes, its common for the pilot to not start both engines until near the runway or shut down one of the engines immediately after landing, don't be alarmed if this happens :) Just about economy and noise control.

Air NZ also operate the tiny 12 seater beechcraft 1900 that are great fun!

Indeed - that's the same reason why back in the days of the big propliners first-class was at the rear of the aircraft.

With the change to jets first-class moved to the front to escape the noise of the efflux.

Thanks for all replies. Flew on ATR 42 AFAIK Aer Lingus plane St Fintan operated by Aer Arann. Flight took off on time from Dub and flying time was 25mins. Was sitting at rear of plane and yes it was a bit noisy. Plane was full. Inbound Ronaldsway was great little airport to watch take offs and landing. Plenty of Flybe and Easyjet flights there. Same plane home this time about half full. Enjoyed T2 no queues and very clean and efficient.

There's only one place to avoid sitting on a turboprop flight..

Nope, international standard weights used on Aer Arann Regional/ Aer Lingus Regional/ Stobart Air flights.

Aer Arann Islands weight individual pax on the BN Islander.
