Has anyone heard of this?

In Japan there are these places where depressed prostitutes go to sit and drink with this lad called a host. He will sit there and talk about only positive things while the girl drinks untill she passes out, then the host will order more drinks on her behalf because he works for the establishment. Apparently not exclusively used by prostitutes but who ever uses these tends to be very loyal to the same host but they usually dont have sex with them.

Has anyone heard of this or can shed some light on this unique piece of Japanese culture?

Actually it's mostly Hostesses. The hostess industry is huge in Japan.

There are some male hosts.

The girls sit in bars ( the bars employ them) and business men buy drinks for themselves and the girl. The is paid by the bar and she encourages the man to come back and become a regular. They flirt with them and text them outside of the bar and i guess make them feel good. Prostitution is legal and accepted in Japan. Apparently western hostesses are sought after. There are bars that specialize in european hostesses.

Hosts are the male equivalent.


And you have to be very good looking male or female.

A host is basically there to entertain you, like your group's own personal waiter who'll crack jokes, chat with you, etc.

Where you're getting this "depressed prostitutes" bit I've no idea.

What's weird here is you've got a fairly ordinary kinda thing, and 'cos it's Japanese, you're acting like omg wtf? What's with people overly exoticizing any old thing that's Japanese?

The pics outside many bars in Shinjuku / Kabukichō show guys who'd frankly be considered a big bunch of preening girlymen anywhere else.

This is what i was told. also that they were more 1 on 1 sessions. The closest thing I seen to it is this pub in Korea that was full of nice looking girls and they were very upfront about wanting to be bought drinks but they didnt want the (s)hite beer I was offering, some mad expensive yoke was all they drank. Kind of the same as over here i suppose except the pub doesnt need to bother employing the girlies they just land up

There are hostesses also in Thailand. Also in the US there are private clubs that employ beautiful girls usually Russian (clubs Russian owned) who get the marks to buy bottles of vodka for $1000 a pop per bottle or more.
I recall a couple of these clubs in Miami being raided and shut down a few years ago because some poor bastards had upwards of $30000 charged on their credit cards.
So I would say bars employing pretty girls/men to talk to clients while encouraging them to buy expensive drink is not exclusive to Japan. I do have to say though Japan tends to approach the operation with a bit more class:)

Host or hostess bar: customers go there and get listened to, flirted with, and fawned over, made to feel they are good-looking, intelligent, important. They pay handsomely for this.

Hostess bars are more common, but host bars are growing in number as more women are working (in good, well-paying jobs) than before.

They range from upmarket places to the pits. In upmarket places, it's an environment where sex is not even hinted at, the kind of place where the girls have to be up to speed with the latest political and economic news, because that's what their customers want to talk about. It's not unusual for companies to woo potential corporate customers in places like these. One of my old students was a high-level salesman for a kitchen appliance maker/distributor, and had a personal budget of 1,000,000yen a month for 'entertainment' like this.

The other end of the scale is seedy fleapits where the girls (often from other Asian countries) may be offering sexual favours for a fee, often in the toilets. The line between hostess bars and brothels is clearly getting blurred here.
