Tyre damage query

    I am presently running a set of Schwalbe Ultremo ZX road bike tyres, which came with the new bike last November.
    Have recently started to get a couple of punctures but only in the rear wheel.
    Last puncture was glass and actually slit a 4mm gash in the tyre.
    Now that I've fixed the puncture, replaced the tube and pumped it to it's correct psi, I can actually just see the inner tube through the slit in the tyre.
    Took it for a 60k spin Sunday and had no problem but is this an accident waiting to happen if I continue with this tyre? or is it safe to scrounge more mileage out of it before changing??

    I do have a new set of Continental GP4000s tyres but was keeping them reserve.

    I don't know about accident, especially on the rear it shouldn't be too dodgy but it's highly likely to puncture again.

    An old trick is to fill cuts with super glue but 4mm sounds a bit bad. Often in puncture kits there's that one heavy rubber pad which you can use to patch the inside of the tire wall. You could deflate, patch the inside and try to glue the cut closed on the outside but I'm not sure it's worth the bother really.

    I might try the super glue idea...not heard that one...
    I'm doing TDC 160k Saturday, so suppose I'm only asking for trouble, having a tiny slit in the trye with the tube peeping out...

    Certainly are. The tube will blow out on Saturday. Even the tyre patch is a temporary fix but should make it until your new tyre arrives in the post.

    If you can see the tube through the cut, it's time to bin it. It will puncture again in no time.

    Ripped tyre in the bin. You won't just puncture ... the tyre will explode out if it and you will be left in the side of the road.If you have replacement tyres use them.

    If you had the same problem with a motorbike or car tyre what would you do OP?

    Bin it. A new tyre is only money. A new head on the other hand...

    Had the exact same problem courtesy of a 2" screw with the same tyres, and yes it did puncture again after which I binned it, was only a few weeks old too:mad:

    Have the ZX tires myself. Find them quite grippy but prone to cuts. Have a number of lumps taken out of the tire (not quite down to the tube) but haven't had many punctures so still trying to get a few more kms out of them.

    Will be replacing with GP4000's.

    Change it. No question. Brakes and tyres are THE most important part of the bike. This is where you must not scrimp. GP4000 is a tyre that will last longer and you will have less punctures. They are not cheap, about €50 in a local shop, but you can corner with confidence knowing that you are glued to the tar and they will last a few thousand kms.

    Wouldn't bother with these expensive tyres myself.
    Cheap training tire = job done.
    Go clock up the miles and bring your posh tyres out on race day.

    Old tyres will be replaced this evening with the GP 4000s.
    As you said, don't fancy having to pick my teeth up off the road, if the damaged tyre gives up on a fast decent....

    Fair enough, never had to use one myself. I did pull a 25mm wood screw out of a tire once but it didn't leave that big a hole really.
