Approaching employer about changing notice period.

I'm in the process of changing careers from Finance to something more IT related such business analysis/Software tester but the big problem I am encountering when I approach agencies/potential employers is my notice period which is two months. I feel it's going to be a real hindrance when I intensify my search over the summer.

Is it ever a good idea to approach my employer and try and negotiate a reduction from my original contract?

Im in a junior position with the company and they are aware that i wish to move on to something else as they know i am at the latter stages of a part time IT degree and i have applied unsuccessfully for several internal positions.

    Many Thanks.

It's fairly unusual to have a notice period of that length in a relatively junior role, so I'd suggest having a discussion with your peers/managers to find out if it has been enforced in the past

It is unusual. Anyone i know who had a long notice period in the company has worked the notice out as they were going travelling etc and not starting a new job. others who started earlier only had one month to give.

You'll most likely have to negotiate so, if I were you I'd be saving holidays to take as part of your notice?
