What is a numerate discipline?

    Hi all,

I see this sometimes in job descriptions but I don't know if my qualifications can be classified as such.

My undergrad was a biological science degree, the post grad I'm currently completing is a level 9 dip in accounting. I suspect the former wouldn't be considered numerate but the second possibly might be?

    What is a numerate discipline?

    Thanks!

It is Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Physics, probably Applied Biology is also numerate (I saw Medical Coding Position requiring education in Biology).

Applied biology, hmmm. Most biological science degrees have some applied component. It's a bit vague! :)

Well, if you use IT or mathematical modelling in biology, that what I meant by applied Biology. As a mathematician, I have heard about Mathematical Immunology and Genome Project - these are definitely numerate disciplines. I would conclude that any discipline that uses Mathematics, can be called numerate.

You would rather hope that accountants are numerate!

Yeah, but I wondered was numerate more about formulae and maths. Accounting isn't massively about maths.

While accountant use numbers each day they are generally performing basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and generally have no training in formal mathematical methods.

It would be expected that someone with a numerate degree should be able to understand complex mathematical concepts, formulas and be able to use those concepts to model scenarios.

I'm not sure Economics would be classified as a numerate degree (Comp Sci may not be either). Generally Maths, Physics or Engineering are considered numerate degrees.

Mathematical Economics is indeed numerate, trust me :) Why Computer Science is not numerate? True Computer Scientist must know Functional Analysis, Mathematical Logic, Mathematical Analysis, Combinatorics, Linear Algebra, Game devs must know Matrix Analysis and Geometry and many more.

If you see a role that you think you could fulfill, the apply for it. You'll be told quickly if you're not eligible, and you've nothing to lose.

L9 in accounting is a reasonable qualification, and should get you some recognition - esp. if the role is in any way related....
