Wheel Question

    Hi

Hoping someone can help me on a wheel issue.

My rear wheel has a nice bit of play in it and I dropped it into my local bike shop.

They advised I need a new wheel. I have cartridge bearing on it and as a result they could not see into the wheel properly. They advised there may be cracks in there. They tightened it as best they could but there is still play. Replacing the hub/bearings would not solve the play.

    Does this sound correct?

I didn't understand what they meant.

Thanks in advance. Wheel is two years old btw.

What type of wheel? Even basic wheels can be adjusted / tightened

    Fulcrum 7's.

Thanks . Is there a chance that the play can not be removed due to damage?

it looks like they are cartridge or sealed bearings not loose ones. you should just need to get replacements and insert or get a shop to do it. its not hard to do.

you probably get them in the cyclesuperstore, ebay or dicksons bearings.

That's what I thought. They are sealed bearings in those wheels. I may get another shop to look at the wheel and see what they say.

It's quite strange that they wouldn't replace the sealed bearings

had a similar problem a few weeks back with my rear Fulcrum 7. Not a whole lot of play in the rear axle but enough for concern. Brought to my LBS and found that the bearings needed replacement. 25 quid all in including labour. Much better than replacing a wheel.

I didn't think cartridge bearings could be tightened up due to the way they are made (but then I'm not an expert on those yokes).

Sounds like a LBS trying to sell you a new wheel (or two).

    Thanks everyone for your help.

I suspected it was just a matter of removing the cartridge and replacing it.

I will go to another bike shop and hopefully they will sort it ok.
