I'm thinking of upgrading from my 600D to a full frame camera but I'm stuck. I don't know whether I should go for the 6D which seems to me like a modern version of the 5D MKII. The 5D seems however like way more of a pro camera, and if and when I decided to get serious with photography (I'm a full time software developer but I'd like to start making money as a photographer, even just as a project to see if I can set up some kind of side business) I think it would suit me more in the long run. Unless I actually upgrade I think I'll be fighting my impulses to buy one anyway for the next while, so I've decided in order to putting myself in debt to save over the next couple of months so I can buy one while remaining financially responsible.

I like that the 6D is cheap, has wifi and geo tagging. I'd use the wifi a lot I'd imagine for the phone integration and remote control. I think if there was an api or something that I could develop an app for I'd really enjoy doing a bit of development to support my hobby too. The 6D looks like really good value for money.

I don't want to buy a 6D and decide in another 4 months that I actually want the 5D however and there are obviously a great number of advantages technically for owning the 5D, the question is which one? Can pick up a MKII second hand for the same price as a new 6D, or a MKIII for about double. Can I justify the price? Probably, if I'm patient and save properly. Should I try and fund my expensive hobby by trying to make money doing my expensive hobby? What should I do? Which camera should I upgrade too?

I'm kind of at the point where I was thinking of buying a wide angle lens (sigma 10-20 3.5f EF-S)for my 600d but don't necessarily want to now because if I end up buying a FF with something like a 24-70 that'll probably cover what I'm looking for.

Canon 6D is not simplified 5D mk2 its simplified 5D mk3, the noise and IQ arguably is even better or at least on par with mk3. You are loosing 2 memory card slots, fast frame shooting rate, faster sync speed for flash and auto focus points, but getting WiFi and GPS instead .for me it was a no brainer to get 6D. Actually it was better than I expected and I could put the funds that I saved towards were it actually matters, the lens.

Thanks a million guys. I don't do much sports photography (although I'm not sure I'm going to sell my aps-c either because I like the variety) at all and a lot of the stuff I do already would benefit hugely from having greater performance and quality at a higher ISO due to the fact that it's usually dark indoors or night time photography that I do. I'm not going to be skimping out on lenses either, I plan to expend my collection of lenses as I need them as I have the financials to support that expansion. I guess part of the reason I'd kind of like to make the switch to a full frame camera now is that I was looking at a wide angle lens for my 600d and rather than splash out €500 on an ef-s lens, I could upgrade my camera to a FF with a 24-105 L or a 24-70 L and not only have a much higher quality lens with a wider angle, but I'd have a much better body too.

None of the rest of the workflow stuff is a problem for me either. I think from the two responses you guys have given me so far I'd be silly not to go for the 6d.

I was in your situation last year. Had a 600D, wanted a FF. Couldn't justify the extra grand for the 5DIII at the time. Studying photography for nearly 6 months now and I still can't justify it at the moment.

24 on a FF is wide but it isn't *that* wide. I bought a 17-40 lens for the 6D a few weeks ago for said reason.

Imagine quality is superb, ISO capabilities - really good, fast shutter as it is... I'd dip my toe in the FF water with the 6D first if I were you, especially as you're not (nor am I) a professional photographer.

Thanks Mark. I think the rational decision would be the 6D.

Nerro, what do you think of the AF on the 6D? Is it better than the 5D2?

I haven't used 5D mk2 so can't comment on that. But from using 6D I can say that centre focus point is really and i mean really sensitive, I am getting perfect results in near darkness, always bang on, unfortunately I can't say about the rest of them.sometimes they are struggling to get focus if I choose specific point in dim light, if you let the camera to choose them for you for some reason i havent noticed this problem? but overall don't have any major complaints.

Thanks Nerro. The 5D2 struggles on low light.
