    Hi all

Junior cyrus will be along any day now, and i need a rear window shade apparently.

I bought an expensive set thats supposed to fit exactly (audi a5 sportback) but because of the frameless rear windows and the fact they raise when you shut the door, the clips keep breaking

can anyone recommend a rear passenger window shade that doesnt look terrible?

Have a similar setup on my Passat CC but luckily mine came with rear privacy glass from the factory.

Rear side windows and rear windscreen tinting, you are probably looking at €300 to €400 I'd think. Price will probably depend on the quality of work but it is probably the best solution.

should have ticked that option :(

Tinting is probably your only option.. give Autoflair a call. Came recommended from another Boardsie and they did a great job on my first A6

Are the ones you have like this?

    http://www.uvcarshades.co.uk/

I had them on a few cars, found them great. Just normal windows though, no frameless ones!

I'd say you'd be better off with tinting.

Way off! Got front and rear sides and the back windscreen tinted of shades.ie for €160. Just the rears would be cheaper. Give them a ring, awful sound guys.

The windows in you car would be already tinted to an extent. They would certainly be opaque to any harmful UV rays you might be worried about.

Tinting may not be an option on an A5, it certainly wasn't for me on a new model A6. The guys in shades.ie advised that on newer audis the whole door has to be taken apart due the mechanisms, rather than just the normal door cards & they wouldn't recommend it. It would be worth a call to them as a reputable tinting firm like them to establish if it can be done.

I ended up getting blinds from http://www.uvcarshades.co.uk/ but as you say mightn't work with clips/frameless doors

    are you sure about that?

Yes, they would have UV protection, but tinting is nice to take the glare away.

I had normal pull down shades and they just get wrecked, they lasted about 2 months before I got the car tinted.

I used shades.ie on recommendation from boardsies, I got the whole back of my Passat Estate done for €160 and honestly, it's a great job, 2 years on and they're still perfect.

Google says this is their number:

99% sure all cars now come with some level of tint. When I was in shades, they tested a "clear" pane of car glass and it was only something like 75% transparent. ie. There is a tint already on it.

I know this might be a red rag to a grumpy/heavily pregant Mrs. Cyrus - but why bother. The group 0 baby seat will be rear facing, and 99% of them have sun hoods anyway - see image below - they baby will be more looking out the back window that the side....

Additionally my kids (9 & 5 1/2 now - neither showing ill effects) hated them and pulled them off the windows within 30 secs of getting into the car once they could reach them.....

But I know in some things you don't have a choice and at this point in may be one of them - just had to point it out.

Good luck with that - setting up the seat in the back of your car may help too - but of course none of this may help and you'll be back to square one.

    Cheers,

None of this stuff is actually necessary.

Whoever told you it is (Saoirse probably) is FOS .

You don't need them, but they do come in handy.

Definitely possible on an A5 Sportback - see attached picture (looked fantastic in real life, my old camera phone and photography skilz don't do it justice).

    My 2c.

Tinted windows do make it a good bit cooler in the back of the vehicle, but don't solve the main issue of direct sunlight in to a child's eye's. Both myself (Factory tint on a 5 Series) and the Wife (Aftermarket tint on an XC60) have separate sunblinds for the smallest fella. Small, roller type ones that were about €12 each, and are more or less useless, but slightly better than nothing.

As they don't cover the whole window, the sun gets in either side, but they did block a lot of the sun, if it hit it in the right direction.

The sun can still get the kids in rear facing seats. It's not so much burning or heat, it's the discomfort of direct sunshine in to a child's eye's that causes the issues. Not so much to the child (they cry), more to the adults (the child cries). Once they are 12 months or so, they know to turn away from the sun, so it's only really a temporary thing.

I wouldn't spend too much on sunblinds, but I'd definitely consider getting the rear's tinted. Not just for the kids, but (IMHO) add's to the appearance of the vehicle - especially an A5 Sportback.

The one we had done was done by Autoflair, as recommended earlier in the thread. Not the cheapest in general, but never had any issues with their work.

sorry but in my experience you DO need them. If you keep the hood on the car seat up you can't see baby easily in the mirror. Plus even with tge shade up sunlight cones in through the side and back windows. They may be tinted to sine extent but babies eyes are quite sensitive. I am thinking of getting our windows tinted because with the inbuilt sunshades our two get red eyes and rub their eyes because if the angle is wrong and sunlight gets in they get driven mad. In addition it will help keep the car a bit cooler.
