I see these are falling into a nice price bracket recently and as I want to get rid of my Volvo I'm wondering a bit about these cars.
I had a 1998 TD a few years ago and it was very reliable but ever so boring.
I know the Avensis won't have my jumping for joy but I do like the interior.
What I have noticed though is that the 2.0 diesel is only 115bhp?
I always thought the had 130bhp.
Anyone able to shed some light?

130 on the 2 litre? Don't think so. Maybe on the 2.2's I heard about. The Mk2 avensis was 106 bhp, then got a small bump in 2006 I think.

I thought the 2.2s were running closer to 150.. Hmm
I mean a 2.0 turbo diesel with 106bhp in a such a lump of a car is just pathetic.
Just checked it there, they start off with 114bhp and make their way up to 148 for the 2.2.

What year are you talking about here? 2.0 litre D-4D from 2000 to 2006 had 116bhp which would have been the norm back then. Remember BMW and Audi still sell 2.0 litre diesel engines in 2014 with similar bhp. 2.0 litre D-4D from 2006 (facelift model) to present is 125bhp.

I'm talking about the 04/05 models. I was just wondering if it is enough of a power output with such a heavy car.
Has 280nm of torque so it isn't that bad I suppose.

My mother has driven one for 4-5 years now. Very reliable engine. The DMF went in hers but that's common place on all modern diesels now and we replaced it with a solid flywheel. Its done 195k now and runs really well and gives low to mid 50's in MPG no problem. I've only driven it a handful of times and it has good torque and the power is adequate. They're not slow but not exactly fast either if you get my drift. My only quibble with the engine is that it sounds like it belongs in a massey 165! :D

check condition of air conditioning unit ,could cost two grand to replace new in republic ,can be by-passed using a shorter belt costing €30,also seat ratchets up to 06 were prone to slip,
i have 08 avensis and turbo unit will now have to be replaced for second time first at 120,000km now at 170,000km , good car otherwise especially suspensions.05 have plenty power but if you push it but fuel consumption suffers then, normally round 50+mpg
