I'm a total noob when it comes to tablets but was going to buy one as a birthday present. I am just wondering about 3g/4g connectivity; do you need to insert a sim card or is this feature built in to the tablet?

(I'm still undecided on which one to buy, was considering something from Samsung or Apple, if that clarifies anything)

Sim card in the tablet yes. You could use tethering or hotspot from your phone depending on your phone and data plan.
