Does Mark McCall get the credit he deserves?

..... I don't think he does, I think they can beat Toulon. No one on here is a fan of Sarries, but because of McCall factor I hope they win it particularly given the opposition.

I just wonder how much Brendan Venter has influence on things to be honest.

I think McCall is doing a great job as Saracens are getting better and better and I will be cheering them on in the final too.

Let's all go away and think about that one deeply.

He gets no credit at all in Ireland which is strange really. Did anyone mention him at all when discussing Kidney's replacement? I know Schmidt was more or less nailed on but others like COS were at least mentioned in dispatches.

I still hope Toulon win the final.

Out of sight, out of mind.

O'Shea has got plenty of plaudits though.

I suspect it's down to his stint at Ulster which started ok but ended badly.

O'Shea is on RTE every other week doing punditry.

I don't think the majority of Leinster and Munster supporters would particularly care about his time in Ulster to be perfectly honest.

He got a bit of attention but I think a lot of the reason is, as was mentioned, the fact COS is a regular on TV over here, was a higher profile/more recent international and Quins are noted for their entertaining high tempo style of play, while Saracens' reputation, rightly or wrongly, is the opposite.

After yesterday though he is getting a lot more attention already because A) Saracens have a very good chance of winning the big one, and B) in getting to that final their style of play was very free flowing and entertaining. If they have another performance like that in the final his profile is going to go way up with the average Irish fan

You learn something every day, and I didn't really know McCall was Irish. Some of those Saracens tries were class yesterday, and if Leinster could emulate that it would be one happy Swiwi. Given Saracens are top of the Aviva too, it's not as if this HEC success to date has come out of nowhere.

He was Ulster coach for a number of seasons. The whole setup at Ulster was a shambles though for most of his time there, from an organisational point of view. Came from the blazers more than anything. Humphreys has made a huge difference there.

Just watching the official highlights now, and that penalty try was ridiculously harsh, but the obstruction call was 100% correct IMO.

(I realise I'm posting all over the shop tonight when it comes to keeping on track with the theme of the threads :o )

O shea to me is not a great coach. He only built on what richards already built. He brought in 1 player out of the squad that won the premiership himself and quins haven't really progressed since.

Sarries have been building year on year and McCall has to take a lot of the credit for it. They are by far the most complete team in England. Could Humphreys tempt McCall home at the end of next season to replace Anscombe? O'Shea has a much higher profile, but I'm not convinced he is a better coach than McCall...

Former Irish international, he was a tough tough operator at centre.

No he isn't. He is a director of rugby, which is different. John Kingston is head coach I believe and was so before O'Shea took over

Is O'Shea's role not more like Humphreys at Ulster.

McCall had a pretty rough time at a Ulster in the end, he may not want to come back. Then again things have changed a lot.

No, it's nothing like that. COS has far more of a role in the actual rugby/coaching/selection side of things.

Kingston is a coach and a bloody good one by all accounts. Cos picks the players he signs and has done a **** job to date...boticia and a few bad props. Deano picks ross and james Johnston then to replace him. He picked up nick easter , danny care and nick evans. Brought through robshaw and brown. Oh and he picked up strettle out div 2 too. All cos needed to do wss sign some decent 2nd row and keep johnston.
