If you're not going through the bike to work schemes id suggest going second hand. Pleanty out there and you'll get a cracking bike for that kinda money.

Just be worried about a second hand one, usually rent on the trails and the bike get some punishing...I'd be worried about the frame.

I wouldn't buy a 29er, it's a fad that is quickly dying, since the emergence of 27.5 lots of manufacturers are dropping 29r designs and eventually it will just be too much effort to pick up spares and new kit.

    Buy a 27.5 if you're looking for something that isn't 26.

Bizango kills the Rockhopper in reviews, think I'll check out how much parcel motel tomorrow for a delivery price, can't see anything second hand or new as good for the money.

I don't know how you came up with that; 29ers are as strong as ever. They've certainly been around long enough to be beyond a 'fad'. Giant is the only manufacturer who is making noise about killing them off, but they've still got plenty in their line up. 29ers have a significant market share which is not at risk to 650b, so there are no worries about them going extinct. 26", on the other hand… It was fun while it lasted.

Came across 2 bikes I can't find reviews but seem well specked for the price, what do you makes of these.

    There's the Radon ZR Team 29 7.0 for €699

and the Canyon Yellostone AR 4.9 for €799

The canyon seems light for it's price point as 12.17kg.

Agreed, 29er's are not a fad, its way to expensive to tool up for a different wheel size to just start killing them off.

I was going to get a 27.5, I like the fact the frame is significantly smaller and for trails and DH that's what I like, to be standing off the frame as much as possible with more narrow control.

However, the truth is I'll probably only do a little bit of DH or maybe enduro during the summer once I get used to it again, the majority of my cycling will be commuting to work. So for that reason I went with the 29. It's actually incredibly how a few turns of the crank on a higher gear and you've covered a huge amount of distance. My frame is a little heavy as well, so whilst the initial acceleration is tough, once you're at high speed the bike moves very quickly.

So really, my advise would be: are you solely using the bike for MTB'ing, or is it mostly for commuting? If the latter, go for the 29er. If the former, then try out a 27.5... Or just try out both and see what you like.

I hear ye, they are built to take a pounding though so the frame wouldn't be my first concern. Once you do a check to make sure there are no cracks or dents etc. What will get you is the suspension, depending on the setup it can be pricey to get that serviced. Also, make sure the brakes are in good nick. If I had my time over again I'd go second hand. Saying that, my Kona Kahuna DL had proved to be a very versatile machine and I'm happy with it.
Bike comes with a lifetime guarantee on the frame which says a lot.
