Import Question

    I am thinking of buying a 1988 uk imported car that has been in the country since 2008. As far as I can gather it was brought into the country (he says he has the certificate of permanent export V561 and just section 10 'new keeper supplement' of the V5C/2 form. It has been passed on to two other users but due to mechanically issues never put on the road. It was never registered over here and has been parked up for four years up until 2012. After that is was broken for parts. I am planning on restoring (as I have the bits it's missing on two scrapped models that I have) so it should be a cheap fix - and it gives me something to do in the bright evenings. Plus I will buy it for very little. My questions are as follows;

    - Will I have to pay the VRT from 2008? If not who would be responsible - Export Cert just has name of new keeper that brought it in ireland - no address. Is the original person responsible?

    - Because of it's condition will they inspect it at the DOE centre - Driveshaft and engine parts missing? I'll have to get it lifted to the centre.

    - Will its current state help lower the valuation for the VRT.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Yes, you will have to pay the backdated VRT, the cert of permanent export has the date printed on it so a makey up letter wont work.

    You take it to the NCT for registration not the DOE.

    Was it in working condition when it was imported in 2008? VRT on importation applies to vehicles capable of mechanical propulsion; if the engine/transmission had been removed prior to import, no VRT would have been due at that point. Satisfying the authorities of that position would be a different matter.

    That now I don't know and I have no way of finding out - it's been sold a couple of times!! VRT of a car of similar age and spec is 1300.00!!! I have agreed 150.00 euros for it - only if the VRT is not mad money. If there's no way round it then it won't be happening.

    One final question will the export cert do for registering it?
