Didn't go to Bucharest, however heard mixed reports about it,
I traveled from Greece into Sofia in Bulgaria and had a nightmare trying to get a train over the border. I was limited however with my interrail pass and nearly all the days the trains were on strike. But that was 2 years ago when I saw riots in Athens, I'm sure it's better now (haven't seen anything in the news in ages about it) so we ended up getting a bus from Thessoloniki in Northern Greece to Sofia through the night, cheap enough for the trip was like 30 euro and included food. Will look up the bus company if you'd like. Well recommend Thessoloniki on your way down to Athens, great buzz about the place. :)
    Enjoy your trip
