What types of insurance do you have? Poll included

I thought it would be interesting to see what types of insurance people have/pay for and why/why not?

I don't have a medical card and I don't have health insurance, I also don't plan on having it in the near future either as I am relatively young and healthy. So I'm not overly enthused with these mandatory health insurance plans.
But I have home insurance and comprehensive car insurance. I've never needed to claim from either so even though it's a pain having to pay for it knowing that I'm just contributing towards someone's dividends it gives me peace of mind throughout the year.

I draw a line when it comes to phone insurance, it'd be a pain to lose/break a €500 phone but I refuse to give money to crowds like this, I was reading that today which prompted me to create this thread.

So has insurance saved you from financial ruin, have you wasted thousands over your life without ever needing to claim or have insurance providers ever not held their side of the deal with a legitimate claim?

No for everything except travel insurance, because I own very little.

I only really get travel insurance because it's mandatory in certain cases.

Home/car/life/health insurance i have and consider necessary.

I never take out insurance on products like phones/laptops etc, i tend not to lose or break things so its a waste of money, ditto holiday insurance.

Would love to ditch my vhi but actually claim twice on it on the last two years, would have ended up seriously out of pocket/months on waiting list without it

I've health insurance and a medical card !

Best of both worlds there , no wasting €50 everytime I go to the gp with some silly infection but also no long waiting if something serious happens / I need to see a consultant as I can just go to a & e in the Hermitage or Beacon / See the consultant privately.

Only downside is if you go private is your prescriptions aren't GMS ones and you've to pay in full for them(well up to w/e the cutoff for the dps is) . But I mean I've already a pretty sweet deal so I'm not complaining ! :D

Was quoted nearly 4k for health insurance (family of 7) so they can swing for it. Would really love to be able to afford it though. Son has been 12 months waiting for an appointment for a tongue tie that affects his speech and we just found out he needs to see an ent as his hearing isn't great so will be a year for that too I would say 😟

Just on the car. Used to have phone insurance up to a few years ago, but stopped it after considering it a total waste of money.

    No option for volcano insurance?

You forgot pet insurance! I've the doggy insured as if worst came to worst I wouldn't want money to be a deciding factor if she became very ill. Have used it once and got almost €500 back on €600 medical expenses so wouldn't be without it.

Also have health, house, life, travel, two car and hubby has phone insurance. We have a lot of insurance considering we own feck all.

Well, we haven't had any volcanoes recently.

Phone insurance is a tax on stupidity in my opinion. Put the money you pay for it i to a savings account weekly, and if you do lose / break your phone you'll have the price of a new one.
The phone insurance companies are complete cowboys and will do anything to avoid paying out. And you will not get a new phone from them, it will be a refurbished phone. Complete scam.

Can't your phone go under your house insurance anyways just like jewelry , laptops etc ?

Yeah, I reckon a volcano is coming this way since we haven't had any recently. We're long overdue for one. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The only insurance I have is car and only because it's mandatory, as I don't own a house or have dependents don't see any point it.

No to everything, except occasional travel insurance, and I have a medical card, until December anyway. Oh, and I like polls. :)

Health and life insurance through work. Wouldn't get them if I had to pay for them.

I'm insured on my Mother's car also.

I'm a yes to home, car, travel, health & life insurance.
You are also missing the mortgage payment protection insurance - which in my opinion is absolutely critical these days. Personally, it has saved me from defaulting on my mortgage since I lost my job in August of last year. Big stinking fan of that, I paid 80 euro a month for five years; they have paid me out over 6 thousand euro so far.

Health cos I've a long term illness that sometimes requires hospital admission and regular tests. VHI have paid out way more than I've paid them in recent times.

Car cos it's mandatory. Fully comp cos it's €4 different a month.

Travel (annual policy) cos I travel a bit and it's worth it for the year.

Don't have life assurance, phone assurance or home insurance but the house is insured.

Which type of insurance is that? I know you can get serious illness cover and income protection(due to minor illness) but you got protection from loss of employment?

It's an option under a payment protection policy I took out with my mortgage. Covers me in the case of involuntary unemployment and serious illness.

Insurance is a six-figure annual pain in the hole. I could buy a nice house with what I have to shell out for insurance every year, between el,pl,commercial vehicles,PI, specialist work policies, work vehicles( road sweeper , teleporter, tractors, JCB etc) home/farm/business premises/rental properties, health, private cars and the list goes on. I'm an insurers dream, and there's not a thing that can be done to avoid any of it.

    Have car and home insurance.
Work pay for my health insurance so I may as well have it.
I never take out insurance for phones or extended warranties for white goods like washing machines. Pointless nowadays because it costs nearly as much as the repair work inevitably will in the unlikely event that the product breaks.
White goods are ridiculously cheap to buy compared to even 20 years ago.

Depends on the insurance company in question. Because I'm planning on buying an iPhone 5S, which will cost me €700, and the insurance I'm planning on getting works out at roughly 70 a year. Even if you only get a refurbished phone, it's still worth it, because I believe even 2nd hand iPhone 5s' go for 600 euro. I mean, realistically, if I insure my phone, and claim on the insurance, the phone I had in the first place is no longer brand new, why should I expect them to pay for a brand new phone?
