Cars from the 90s with 4 speed gearboxes.

Today I drove a 93 VW Golf "Ryder" and it had a 4 speed gearbox. I thought it was a bit "new" for a 4 speed box. I couldn't think of anything newer that had a 4 speed box.

Are there any newer than 93 with a 4 speed box?

Not past 93 but the closest I can remember would be the K10 micra which was stopped in 92 if I'm right ?

The late Rover Mini had a 4 speed box. That was pretty old hat by that stage though.

Peugeot 106 had a 4 speed box well into the mid 90's.

First car was a 1990 fiat uno. 4 speed box, not the most stylish of cars!

4 speed manuals were rare by then, but 4 speed autos were still doing the rounds. I know the 2003 CRV was a 4-speed auto :(

Was a great car. Aircon, electric windows, 4 speed gearbox. Great starter car.

Lol, I remember someone in work phoning me up talking about a Toyota Corsa and I sat there thinking to myself this person clearly knows nothing about cars, no such car exists.

It was rather embarrassing when I saw the car.

I worked in Holland in 1995, and the boss there had a '94 Merc diesel, 190D I think. He was giving me a lift somewhere, and I noticed it had a 4 speed manual 'box. I clearly remember thinking at the time, "you tight b@stard!"

The Nissan Micra had a 4 speed CVT Auto until not very many years ago.

How does 4 speed CVT work?

Maybe its got stepped preset ratios, primera had a 7 speed cvt.
The mk2 punto speedgear had 6 preset ratios on the ELX and 7 on the Sporting.

I can never see the point of 5 speed boxes...it's the ratios that are important and yet some people seem to think their car is faster as it has 5 speeds. (mine has 6 and the I'm pretty much always at the speed limit in 4th, with a pointless two shift ups to come....

Thats a point. I'm past th UK motorway limit in second so why do I need the rest of the gears?:-)

Correct me if Im wrong, but the point of the extra gears is economy, not speed is it not? As in, if youre doing the speed limit in 4th gear then you could be doing the same speed in 5th, only with lower revs.

Mines an auto, but the point of 5th is very much economy. It's the difference between Cork and back last weekend on a tank of fuel or having to fill up again :-)

I owned a ford falcon in Australia with a 3.9L straight 6, married to a 3 speed auto. Pretty bad to drive.

I'd have thought the less gears you can get away with in something like that the better? It's going to be fairly low revving, no?

I was doing just over 3k revs at 100mph in 5th. If that yoke was doing similar in 3rd then happy days.

By the time I owned it, wasn't much hope of getting 100mph out of it. It was grand cruising around 60. Got me through the outback without breaking down although I couldn't run the AC or the temp dial would start to climb. Refueled it 3 times in one day driving >1000km in the Northern territory.

Never owned a 4 speed guess I am not old enough. Every car I have owned has been a 5 speed. Alot of motorcycles are in fact 6 speed. One of the little 125's I have owned had no usable power in 6th. A shift to sixth resulted in a drop in rev and and no more pull.
