Dreamcast/Saturn game ideas

I've recently purchased these bad boys and now need to start my game library for them and was looking for some ideas. The Dreamcast came with a few games (Ikaruga, Crazy Taxi, Under Defeat, Giga Wing 2, Virtua Striker 2000, Soul Calibur), but I want more ... and I've literally got nothing for the Saturn.

The catch is however that I'm not gonna be playing these all of the time, so I was looking for more "pick up and play" type of games, as opposed to some story driven/rpg ones where I'd forget what was going on if I hadn't played it in a while (... which reminds me, I should get back to Persona 4 soon!!).

Any ideas would be appreciated and will all be taken into consideration :)

There will be lots and lots of great lists from people here, but my 2 cents is to get Nights as soon as you can, with the controller.
The game is sublime, simply sublime and there is nothing like it on the Playstation platform at all, not until they released it for the PS2 at least!

Panzer Dragoon and it's sequel Panzer Dragoon Zwei are similarly outstanding.

Do pick up Daytona, the first one, Manx TT Superbike and Sega Rally, all good baby, all good.

Your first stop on the Saturn needs to be Panzer Dragoon Saga. It's just so good, in every way. Will only take about 10 hours to get through too so not a big time commitment.

By controller, do you mean there's a certain type of controller for Nights?

Panzer Dragoon looks interesting ... I think I saw Daytona and Sega Rally in GamesXchange on Talbot street for 15 each.

Is it true that the Saturn was basically the last great machine for arcade ports, or did I misread that somewhere?

Nope, each gen throws up some great ports across the platforms.
The Saturn was adept at sprite handling so there are some stellar examples of these ports but then the PS did some great ports as well, Ridge Racer for example.
Gamesexchange prices are OK but he's good to negotiate with if buying a few bits.
Nights needs the analogue controller, should come with it.
It also works with Burning Rangers as well as a number of others.

If you can stretch to it, get the lightgun and Virtua Cop, Virtua Cop 2 and House of the Dead.
And a CRT to play them on.

For some bizarre reason I thought your Saturn was modded when I made the above comment ...I also didn't realize you weren't looking for RPGs. Really should read OPs more carefully! :D

Well, if you ever do come across the above game for a good price (and not the mental €150-200 people are looking for on ebay!) make sure to pick it up as it's one of the system's bests and due to the source code being lost, hasn't been rereleased ever.

Are you into shmups and all things shooty? (Ikaruga, Under Defeat & Giga Wing 2 tell me you are!)

The Saturn has an incredible shooter library. Unfortunately some of the best ones are a bit expensive (Battle Garegga and Radiant Silvergun will set you back about €100) but there's some cheaper stuff to be had there too like Darius Gaiden, Layer Section and In The Hunt.

Also make sure you pick up a 4 in 1 adapter so you can play imports. A couple of great import only arcade type titles are Assault Suit Leynos 2 and Elevator Action returns.

Couple more worth mentioning, Burning Rangers and Guardian Heroes.

What's the difference between that and a *cough* actionreplaycart *cough*

The action replay 4in1 cart allows you to run imports, but not backups. A modchip allows you to run backups but not imports, so ideally, both are good to have.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

But it's easy to patch your backups to any region you like, then it'll happily run.
That said the ram feature comes in handy in some games, doesn't it?

Seems the modchip is the way to go for the Saturn novice :) Though it seems to be a lot harder to come by than the action replay!!

actually, is this what you're talking about ? http://www.segastyle.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=76

I didn't fit mine, Kerbdog did.
And it is handy for those games that are hard to find now.

The power stone games are good fun on the dreamcast if you're into fighting games. Also give bangai-o a try too and the virtua tennis series is also quite entertaining for sports games.

Get a mate (the platonic kind), a couple of pads, copy of Marvel vs Capcom 1 or 2 and watch how your clock can't quite keep track between sessions.

Note to Ciderman: I wrote 'CLOCK'.

    I know you did.
Are we assuming I read every sentence as being a double entendre?
    I've never been so insulted!
Inserting such things in places they've no business being, and in front of an online audience too.

Got myself PowerStone, had a quick go, looks interesting. I'm sure it'd be much better as a multiplayer game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

It's better than the sequel anyway.
It's good fun in single player, insane fun in multiplayer.
Daytona on the DC is brilliant, just fix the controller sensitivity in the settings first, it's too sensitive initially.

probably gonna be a lot of people hating on the button-bashing, but Athlete Kings is a must buy for the Saturn.

If people are going to hate on that game they can do so away from me. It's a great update of the track and field formula.

That's a port from the Arcade right? I remember playing that loads before heading into the cinema in Parnell Street, back when Cineworld was called Virgin Cinemas.

On a side note, there's an excellent Sega Ages title for a jap capable PS2 that combines Athlete Kings (Decathlete), Winter Heat and Virtua Athlete 2K, Sega Ages 2500 Vol 15, cheap as chips as well.

yep, DecAthlete in the arcades, played it lots in the arcade on Westmoreland St myself, and was the first game I got on the Saturn.

Let's see. For the dreamcast, some great pick up and play games i have are...

    Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer
    F355
    Chu Chu Rocket
    (best with three other players!)
    Virtua Tennis
The House of the Dead 2
(you'll need the light gun and and old CRT tv though)

There's also some great ports of PS1 games if you ever feel like straying into longer stuff

    Dino Crisis
    Legacy of Cain: Soul Reaver

Iv'e only got my own Saturn a month or so, so only have a few games on it.
Nights into Dreams. Totally unique game but it plays best with the 3D controller. it's not expensive though.
Sega Rally Championship. The Saturn version is much better than the Dreamcast one so hunt it down.
You need to find Panzer Dragoon!
Also, you should check out Panzer Dragoon Saga, easy enough to find and pretty affordable*

    *not really

Panzer Dragoon Saga, the game so expensive even Steve can only afford one copy.

The price on Panzer Dragoon Saga varies wildly.

Look at the recent sold listings. Everything from £100 to £219

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=panzer+dragoon+saga&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&LH_Sold=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=10&_fpos=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=200&LH_Complete=1

Mine was £70 about two years ago, so it can be had a bit cheaper if you wait.

    Do not buy Blue Stinger!

I think I'm gonna go for Darius Gaiden as my first Saturn purchase...

That's pretty cheap by comparison. there was an american on Classic Game Room forums who was willing to pay over $300 for the thing! that's crazy money! I don't care if the game is fantastic, it doesn't warrant that sort of price tag!

edit: curiosity got the best of me and i just had a quick amazon and ebay search. it's going for anywhere between 150-330 euro! Disc one on it's own was €50!

*shudders* best left forgotten. wasn't that suppose to be some wierd mix between Dino Crisis and Shenmue? maybe not.

That reminds me OP, track down Shenmue

the cardboard outer sleeve and it's condition seems to make such a huge difference to price, so I didn't bother getting one with the sleeves when I bought mine.

the NTSC-J version is very cheap in comparison, usually only about £30

I managed to get one with an outer sleeve and **** a brick every time I want to take the discs out

If your buying a Saturn or Dreamcast should you go with a Pal or NTSC version?

I know after I got my N64 I was told I should have gone with an NTSC version due to the 60htz and games run faster etc..

I didnt realise it at the time and now its too late to go back but if I were to buy either of the above I'd like to know which I should be getting.

    Cheers!

Have always wanted a dreamcast. I know I'll barely play it but its a console I'd love to have under the telly even just for Sega Rally and Daytona!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭Mal-Adjusted

Well the PAL game boxes are much better looking that the NTSC ones if you're going for aesthetics. I don't think it makes too much of a difference otherwise but could be wrong. Iv'e played Sega Rally for both my Saturn & Dreamcast at 60htz without noticing any issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 730 ✭✭✭Hygro

I think my main problem is that I'll be playing these consoles (in fact all of my consoles - PS2, GC, N64 included) on a 42 inch Plasma TV, so I'm hoping that the games that I get wont look too ****ty on it, 60HZ or not!!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,406 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Saturn buy NTSC all the way. To be honest you'll if 95% of your collection isn't Japanese you are doing it wrong. Most of the good stuff is Japan only.

For Dreamcast go NTSC as well. It's easier to get games in better condition, the PAL boxes are bigger and break very easily.

Bought myself an Action Replay cartridge from Play Asia for the Saturn, so when I that arrives I'll be hitting the NTSC stuff!

60hz switch is a must. You'll absolutely ruin most of the saturns catalogue in 50hz since they are mostly fast paced action games.
