Hi I have about 5k max to buy a diesel car for travelling a 500 mile round trip every weekend and very little driving in between as I work in kilkenny and I'm from donegal. I was wondering and would be grateful on any suggestions you might have for a diesel that will be reliable, fuel efficient and an all round stylish car??

    Hello
Getting a fuel efficient, reliable and stylish car for 5k would be difficult. My advice is forget the stylish part. Buy a Volkswagen or skoda diesel for anything up to 3.5k and keep the rest for repairs. Also get someone in the know to inspect the car.

As said a volkswagen group 1.9tdi Diesel engine. There about as reliable as they get for your budget. That engine was in several vag cars including
    Golf
    Octavia
    Passat
    Superb
    A3
    A4
    Leon etc etc.
the octavia would be a good choice as they typically make less than vw or Audi even though they ultimately have the same engine parts. You'd get a new model octavia 05 up for your budget with a bit of money left over. On them long trips the car would comfortably do 55mpg.

Don't neccesarily agree with this. I have an 06 accord that you would pick up for less than 5k.
Mine easily does on the best side of 50mpg. Exec model has all extras and are extremely reliable.

Better than tractor engine 1.9tdi !!!

Shouldn't go too far wrong with something from the diesel Volkswagen Audi Group.

That model accord can be troublesome tbh. I would term them a pos and they do look dated now.

Thanks lads I think the a4 would be the pick of the bunch but they are fairly expensive whereas the skodas are a lot cheaper. Also any thoughts on a Mazda 6?

Forget a mazda 6 diesel plenty horror stories about them, engines and gearboxes. I drive a mazda 6 petrol myself low maintenance cost and almost 40 mpg if serviced properly :) You would buy a 6 petrol fairly cheap.

Cheers for that but a petrol car isn't an option for me. What kind of miles would you say would be your maximum when buying a 1.9 diesel Vag

Are the 2.0 diesel not supposed to be a bad engine like the 05.06.07 a4s??

    Rip off imo.

Not the best engine in the world that early 2.0 either

You can get a decent Mondeo for less than half that easily.

Reliability wise the Mondeo is every bit as good as the Vag's and way cheaper.

You would get a decent sri vectra for 5k. Nice looking car and fairly reliable, egr is the most common problem but its not a big job.

What would be your maximum miles you'd buy? 130k I was thinking.
Vectra are nice but not as nice as VAG

Don't limit yourself to a certain cut off point with regards to mileage, fair enough you don't want to be going colossally high. It would be more important that the car is in good mechanical condition, serviced, timing belts etc. I'd rather buy a high miler that was mechanically sound than a car with 80k that never seen as much as an oil change!

I do similar milage and ended up getting an 06 Avensis 2.o liter for your budget. Good comfortable reliable car, allbeit a little boring

If you are going Avensis then try and get the facelifted model, both were available in 2006. Facelifted model got the newer D-4D engine which has 125bhp, 6 speed gearbox and has a timing chain.

Isn't your plan to ditch it and buy a newer diesel though?
