Nearly Bought a write off

    Hi all,

Wife had deal arranged to buy car trading in her own with a small to medium dealer with up to date service and 6 month warranty. Car was selling/advertised as 1 previous owner and we were told traded it in to buy new car from dealer. Got it checked with mechanic and full history with motorcheck which showed up as perfect re finance, write offs, odometer and accidents etc.

Seller did say that theyre was slight damage done to back door from a shopping trolley.

By chance I was put in touch with previous owner who I actually know and car was in bad enough accident before xmas - someone drove straight into side of car - airbags went out, estimate to fix it from a dealership was 10,000 and hence written off by Insurance and sold to salvage.

Good bit of time, money gone into it and now wifes own car is well past service and needs doing along with tax - we'd have a different car by now if we'd have known and this is additional money not necessary because of the stroke they pulled - anyone know where I stand on this or have any suggestions - I'm not big into claiming or going down authority route but at same time was being sold a pup.

Your post is not clear, what are you asking?
Did you buy the car and want your money back?
    or
did you skip it and want compensation for the money you've yet to spend on servicing taxing the wife's old car?

Put reg in this thread and if a prospective buyer googles the reg they will avoid the pup.

You have no rights as such as you didn't buy the car.

I don't understand how Cartell didn't return it as a write off. There is something else at play here.

Don't understand...you didn't buy it, how would you have any claim For a start, you would have to know for a fact that the seller knew it had been written off....

Aye, but if its a one owner car as stated by the seller, and the original owner says it was scrapped, where did the garage get it?
Agree that the OP had a lucky escape.

Maybe they just want to tell us of their lucky escape, to warn others, and maybe how to deal with a dealer that nearly sold them a lemon.

Sounds like they want compo to me, which is laughable. Their actual options are:

    1. Walk away and thank your lucky stars.
    2. Report them to SIMI, who'll do feck all about it.
    3. Report them to the Consumers Association, who'll likely do the same as 2.

Personally I'd be doing all three and quickly getting back to work finding another car.

In my opinion, people use the words 'write off' because it's sounds more dramatic than 'crashed'. An insurance company will write off a car if it is deemed to be uneconomical to repair. That doesn't mean that it cant be repaired perfectly well by someone willing to work at lower labour rates and maybe using some good second hand body parts. I'd say the car is fine, it just wasn't repaired at main dealer prices. People crash their cars all the time and have them well repaired privately probably through lack of adequate insurance cover. Do you think they all confess to the garage when they are traded in? There are loads of 'crashed' cars on the roads. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them.

€10,000 of side impact damage would be a fair bit though.

Agree that the OP had a lucky escape.

Car could have been bought from a trader, who bought the car as damaged and repaired it.

It may not nessesarily have been the dealer that the OP was dealing with.

and we were told traded it in to buy new car from dealer.

    And
Car was selling/advertised as 1 previous owner

    Vs
written off by Insurance and sold to salvage

Point is, somebody's lying. Most likely the dealer. Doesn't give him much credibility.

"One previous owner" and "one owner from new" can often mean different things.

Id be getting a full diag on the airbag module after that, its a lot cheaper than 10k to put in a light, stitch door cards and get a new steering wheel cover than to buy airbags
