It wouldn't cost as much as you might think. How many bays would you be thinking. The range itself is basically agriculture standard sheeting and steel. Not sure about a ball machine though.

Yup. That just about describes driving ranges in this country. A field with a few distance markers inaccurately distributed with rubbish balls and terrible mats.

About 10 bays, yeah a lot of it would be standard, just the costs of machines etc is where it could be costly

Often wondered about the cost of the lighting in Winter in these places

I know where one was built from a green field site and this is what it cost. There is a lot of netting either side which isn't cheap.

And that was €120? it would be a green field site..the nets would be costly I'd imagine

Depends really on the location, do you need to put safety nets up? lights?
initial set up can be quiet low, as it can be very lucrative, you can improve the facility very quickly as it gets established, with only 10 bays to start, i'd be thinking less than 50k would get you going, not inc the safety nets, I sourced some gear on the second hand market, a buddy of mine works in liquidations and helped out a lot. if you really thinking about it, i can see can I source gear for you.

Location would be rural Kerry...it would need both nets & lights so I would imagine that would drive initial costs from c. €40/€50k to €90/€100k...

If its a rural site, with no dwellings either side or potential to damage other properties, netting not really needed, If you need to route power to the field that can be expensive too, balls mats etc are the smaller cost.

Would there be much profit from a driving range? I know it depends on location, etc but in general would they have a good profit?

I know there is one just after opening in Cork in Ovens but don't know much about it.

Think if you can have grass areas to hit from in the summer months it would be a big bonus

Again...location location location.....if there is a big population in the area, they can be very profitable, no point opening a range in the middle of nowhere.....
if it is top class people may travel...but it has to be good, if its gonna be small it has to have footfall all day.

If it's a rural site then I'd say it'll be quite hard to break-even tbh.
Just a guess, but there's a reason there isn't a range in every second field.

Leaving the start up costs aside, I'm not sure you'd get much change from 100k per annum in operating costs.
Another guess but Wage(s), electricity, insurance, loan interest, maintenance of range & machinery, fuel.... Could easily reach that 100k.

    That's 20,000 €5 buckets to break even a year.
    ~400 per week or ~60 a day....
Would a range in rural Kerry get 60 customers a day?

In the right location a range could be a license to print money but there's a lot of cute w***es down in Kerry :)
One of them would have opened it by now if it was a potential goldmine ;)

You'd have to apply for planning too surely?

Its location, location, location really- if yer on a busy road / near big town give it a shot. If not u' ll struggle
Might get a good whack in grants for it.
Even just put in 6-8 covered bays to start n a big grass area.get good balls for day 1. Good luck

You could start up small and expand depending on demand expand.

It summer know and a basic outdoor only range would only need a tractor/ball collector and a small office/shed for cash/cleaning balls. Could be done for a few grand easily.

However planning permission could be a driver up in costs, when suddenly you are forced to add facilities like toilets and disabled access etc to comply with Building Regs, not to mention rates etc.
