how to approach a principal

I'm covering a maternity leave contract for Irish at the moment and I really like the school I am in. I've two core subjects, Irish and Geography and although common, I know they are useful subjects to have. I have my degree, masters in geography, pde and other certs to do with working with the youth.

There are only 3 geography teachers there and one of them is hoping to go on job share and asked me if I was interested that she would mention it to the principal and see how it goes.

I've been there since December and will be finishing the year out in the school but I would love to go back. Should I tell the principal that I am available as I will be?

I also got the chance to do CPD courses while there and finished my diploma in adolescent counselling (he doesnt know I have this yet) so i thought this might make me more useful too.

Any principals out there that can give me any advice? Or do I actually have a right to approach him seeing as i'm just a "blow in" so to speak (as another teacher put it)!

    Thanks in advance!

Considering the hassle we had getting an Irish teacher this year you should be fine for work!

As for next year and wanting to stay in the school I would definitely say it to the principal that you like the school and that you are available. It can do no harm.

Just dont approach them from behind, they spook easily!

I agree with the above completely, I think TheDriver is a principal as well. You seem to have done lots anyway college wise so you would be an asset to any school!

100% arrange to see the principal. Tell him/her that you have really enjoyed your time there and would be grateful to be considered for any potential hours that may arise next year. I'd try and do it within the next week or 2 .
    Best of luck

We have needed someone with your subject combo 3 times in the past few years and everytime we ended up with two people splitting the job as no one candidate was every though to be suitable...Id say you will have no problem finding a job if this one isn't available (all 3 were maternity leaves)

Really? Where I'm from there's never any openings for Irish or geography and I can't really up and move because I've a son and other commitments here. I think i will just ask him, the worst he can say is no I suppose.

Just wondering about how I can put it to him. He's fairly sound enough and to be honest he's very approachable I just don't know what to say to him. I asked advice from another teacher and she more or less asked me why I thought I would be entitled to anything. She kind of put me off. I know there are other temps there that will probably be asking too, none have my subjects except one girl who has Irish and she doesn't want to go back, she hates the place.

Can't some colleagues be so Helpful!

Definitely agree with km79, arrange to meet/have a chat with the Principal as soon as possible. He will be working on the timetable now, and probably is already considering your Geography qualification for the Job Sharing. But you should also be showing him how interested you are in teaching Geography hours, how much you enjoy teaching in the school and that you would be interested in any potential hours that arise next year.

    Best of Luck.

chat to the principal. There are many factors to be taken into account such as if the job is even going to be filled, if it must be filled through proper advertising procedures or whether there is an oversupply of your other subjects.
Having said that, chat to the P and establish if its a possibility. One thing that must be remembered is to keep looking elsewhere and don't put all your eggs into one basket.........

Thanks everyone! Went into him today and the Vice Principal with a copy each of a mini portfolio of work I had done throughout the year and both them seemed very happy.

There are hours there for both my subjects next year but he won't know 100% if he has to advertise etc.

    Fingers and Toes crossed!
