Unable to pay fine

I got a fine for fare evasion on the DART and I will be unable to pay within the 21 day deadline. I am in receipt of social welfare payments and I have other financial responsibilities which I must keep on. There is absolutely no way whatsoever can I afford to pay the fine with 21 days. I accept responsibility for the fine and I am willing to pay it over a longer period of time, I am looking for a short extension to the three weeks given and I am wondering if this would at all be possible to achieve ?

    Thank you for all replies.

If you ring them they might be able to extend the deadline. They did by a few days when I owed them before.

Just go to jail. If you can't do the time don't do the crime. You are unlikely to be in jail for long anyway.

Didn't some TD not pay his TV licence (or something) on purpose, was out of jail in about an hour.

If it was me, I'd be ringing to see about an extension.

I'd rather not go to jail thanks.

A TD is a different species than us mere citizens. Mick Wallace owes millions in tax, but has yet to see the inside of a Garda cell never mind prison.

It's a criminal offence so prioritize paying it.

And get a criminal record. Say goodbye to ever visiting America or Australia.

Dont listen to people behind there keyboards with nothing to lose who wouldn't have the balls to stand by there words.

If you talk to Irish rail they might help you out, Maybe they could set up a weekly payment or something to help you out.

Wouldn't bother me. I only ever go to the States for work and it would suit me just fine if I couldn't. Business travel is a pain in the hoop.

Two hours in a cell with Bubba could be a long time

You would rather lose your job than pay a fine?

Wonder what would happen if someone who didn't pay a fine was sent to jail, put in a cell, only for his cell mate to introduce himself as Bubba.

OP, contact them and extend the deadline, or can it be paid off in installments?
How much is it for anyway?

Though. this is more than lightly a case of you were caught this time, having done it many times. If thats the case I have little sympathy.

Why would I lose my job?

If I had to inform my boss that I was now not able to travel to America. I would not be able to work anymore. As I would not be able to fulfill my contract with my employer.

You made it sound like you travel for work, If you informed me you couldn't travel I would be terminating your contract as I would be able to get a an employee who would be able to travel and do there job for me.

Then default on debts that have got to be paid. It's a minor offence and doesn't impact my life hugely, so it's at the bottom of the list right now.

I will ring them. And I'd still be able to travel freely even if I got locked up for not paying a fine as it's a minor offence and wouldn't constitute enough days for to have an actual criminal recited debating me from the United States, Canada, Australia or the likes.

It's only the first time I've been fined in my entire life of which I've always used public transport. I've spent thousands like many others on DARY fares, Dublin Bus, Luas, Rural Bus and Train fares.

The fine is for €100 I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but for someone who is in receipt of social welfare and has debts of nearly €2500 which payments must be paid weekly it's a lot of money when you also factor in the cost of living.

Have you a tv or anything in the house to sell. Maybe jewelry.

OP, I would suggest that you should talk to MABS about the debt settlement procedures introduced by the Personal Insolvency Act.

MABS is a free service. It sounds like you are in financial difficulty. You should talk to them.

Thanks for the advice. I can keep on top if payments and don't need financial help too that point for now. I just can't afford to hand over €100 within the next two weeks.

I don't own anything if any value besides my clothes, which I won't be selling. Nor would sell anything to pay a fine as it would be stupid in my eyes to sell something worth more than €100 to pay off €100

Stupid is dodging a dart fare when you cant afford the fine, doubt it wasnt the first you did it either. Maybe the fine will act as a lesson, but I would start by talking to Irish rail or whoever is in charge of issuing and collecting fines.

I would think once you are making a genuine effort to deal with it they will cut you some slack and work it out with you.

MABS will advise you to pay anything which could lead to prison BEFORE any other debts.

    https://www.mabs.ie/fileadmin/user_upload/documents/Information_Leaflets_and_Factsheets/Mabs_Management_2012_Web.pdf

Go to page 9 of the above publication. It is listed there. Your priority my dear, is to pay that fine.

A fine is a priority debt. Credit card debt for e.g. is listed as secondary debt.

It is the first time. I moan about people that don't pay fares or their fair share in society as I see one person not paying up as ripping off everyone else. I always intended on paying the fare at the station I was getting off which I've done before with no problems. Thanks for your reply though.

I could still travel to pretty much anywhere else in the world and I travel within Europe much more often. I would expect my role to change and I'd see my employer in court if they tried what you're suggesting.

No it's pretty standard in prisons for people on fines to be released fairly sharpish. Sometimes you will be unlucky and have to stay in for a night if there are a good few prisoners out on temporary release.

However you don't simply go from a fine to jail. You first get summonsed to court, then you have to be convicted, then you have to refuse to pay the court fine and finally a warrant must be issued.

I would echo the previous poster and contact MABS.
