Depends on the phone, lots of options on eBay for unlocking codes. E.g Moto G costs £2, the Xperia Z1 costs €18. Need more details.

Phone your service provider, eg, vodafone, O2, Meteor etc etc

Was in a CEX last night, they do unlocking too. Pricey though.
Also your local phone repair shop may do it too, depending on the model.

Your operator may be the best bet. Or even if you know someone who's on the network that the mobile is locked to, you could ask them to call to get an unlock code.

Some networks are better than others at providing the codes.

O2 and Nokia Lumnia 520. It is still in contract. I am getting it offered to me on loan if I can unlock it.

    Yes

I didn't know that either. Do you have a link to where this law is referenced?

No I do not have a link. Perhaps google can help you there.

Anytime I get a new phone on contract, I ring up and get the unlocking code.

I have done it 5 or 6 times in the last ten years (everytime I get a new phone)

    Just ring and ask.

They're obliged to provide one once you've been with them over 6 months and/or have bought more than €120/150 worth of credit since buying the phone from them. Details for the various providers here: http://48months.ie/unlock-your-phone

You said it was the law. I thought you'd be able to give some proper info.

I've gotten phones unlocked too but they'd only do it after I spent a certain amount of money. About €160. That was with Vodafone. If I could quote the law you're speaking about I'd be able to get my phones unlocked easier.

I used Google and couldn't find any mention of it.

    That's great info. Thanks peckerhead.

O2 actually have a link somewhere on their site where you enter the imei code and they will unlock it. You Dont have to give names, numbers etc. My brother brought a second hand iPhone that was o2 and we unlocked it that way
