Im thinking of something similar myself..
Ive contacted this crowd and they were very helpful(altho i have not purchased from them as yet)
A clear twin wall polycarbonate sheet is what i will be going for.
I dont want to block any light into the house.

Thanks Marty. A nice site. I see they will provide instructions for a DIY job too.
Let me know how you get on, PM me with more details if you can.

    Thanks.

    Im still looking at ideas..
I like the pic you have linked
Are you going to do it clear aswell??

What im after is a space at the rear of house that will be usable during winter months for doing bits of jobs...keeping kids toys dry...storing some firewood.
Letting the kids get some fresh air when its raining maybe even drying clothes.

Then during the summer it would be a nice place to sit out and eat etc even late into the evening.

There is some place(in tipperary i think) that supply the real heavy clear plastic curtain/sheets that could be attached/detached with strong buttons if the need arised.
i will look into this(the type of stuff you see in restaurants outdoor areas abroad etc.

I dont want it to darken the house hence the clear roof.
I was initially planning on slating the roof but im liking the polycarb idea now.

f you have any more ideas or good pics to glean ideas from id be gald of them.
    Cheers,
    Marty

There are alot of photos here http://www.houzz.com/glass-covered-patio, Houzz is great for photos, the stuff is usually over the top but shows what can be done you have the resources.

Cloth wouldn't last too long where I live I'm afraid. Its more of a rain shelter than a sun blocker I'm looking for :o

I'm considering something similar myself. I'm planning on building a pergola type frame and roofing using a polycarbonate roof from these guys: http://www.nick-gray.co.uk/

I've come across this "Palram Feria Patio Cover", could suit my needs but I'm suspicious.
    Anyone have any experience?

I couldn't find any pictures but I remember seeing a set up in the UK where somebody had basically desert plants under a perspex roof- the trick was, these were from colder deserts (dry but not necessarily hot) so the plants were happy all winter once the rain was kept off them. It might be nice to incorporate a few permanent plants of a similar type.
