A mate of mines laptop was acting up. I looked at it and was really slow etc. couldn't do anything on it. So I took HD out and put in a caddy and hooked it up to mine to do a virus scan. Got 7 nasty viruses and deleted them. Did a scan using tools with properties of hard drive while still in caddy just to make sure no other surprises.

So put HD back in to his laptop and started up ok, but when clicking into his name, screen went black and system restarted. Couldn't get OS running again. So hooked up HD to mine but when I did it was only showing up as NTFS windows E and was denied access to disk.

Just wanted to get photos for him, tried to get access with permission in security tab but no joy. Popped it back in to his and got missing MBR. So went into recovery mode and let windows fix problems( maybe should of gone into command prompt) but didn't. Still no joy.

So now the recovery mode is in a loop, ( attempting repairs) left it on for a day and still same screen, I don't even get options in recovery mode like I did in first place like command prompt where I'd try and fix mbr,fix boot etc. I tried booting into safe mode on his but it stops at system 32/PCIIDEX

I popped HD back into caddy and booted my laptop into safe mode and his HD shows up with all folders that I can click into but can't copy folders onto desktop.

    So anyone any ideas?

If I went into safe mode with command prompt on my laptop with HD in caddy and changed directory would that work?

    Thanks for reading.

If you just want to get his files from they drive you can try giving yourself permissions on his folders. New files and folders inherit their permissions from the parent folder under normal conditions though this can be later changed.

With the drive connected to your working laptop, identify the drive letter of the system partition for the faulty drive.

Open an elevated command prompt and enter:

    C:>icacls "<path to folder>" /grant <your local username>:(OI)(CI)F

    For example:

    C:>icacls "E:\Users\Brian" /grant Peter:(OI)(CI)F

Include the quote marks where shown. Hopefully this will give you full control over the required folders.

    Hope this works for you.
