    Hi,

I've just got a new phone and I'm trying to back up my text messages from my old phone, which is a HTC Hero. I've been trying to download one of the "SMS Backup" apps from the Marketplace, but every time I get the same notification that the download has failed. I've tried clearing the data from the Dowload Manager, and I've even tried formatting my SD card. There's nothing else on the phone that I need, I just don't want to lose my text history. The other thing I see recommended is doing a factory reset, but I can't do that as it'll delete my texts.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Are you sure you're on WiFi? Downloading an app over 2G/3G can be a bit hit an miss.

Yeah, I've only been trying it on wifi. I just tried it via 3G there and got the same notification.

My phone is being disconnected tomorrow morning, so I'd really like to get this sorted tonight.

If you are on WiFi and its not working try downloading the apk from another source and side loading it

Could you elaborate on that? I don't do much app downloading, or use my phone for internet much at all, so I'm not sure what you mean. Thanks.

Google Play downloads an APK file to your phone which is the app installer. But you can get these APKs elsewhere. What's the app you want to try? Maybe you can find it on your phone browser instead of via Google Play.

I've been trying to download "SMS Backup & Restore" by Ritesh Sahu or "SMS Backup" by Christoph Studer.

I just downloaded the APK file for the first one from appsapk.com, but the phone won't let me open it.

You need to free up app space. This means space on the phones internal storage, not on the sdcard. Go to settings -> applications to see what is using space etc.

It says I have 49mb of internal space on the phone.

Alright, that isn't good... if you don't have many apps you must have lots of photos or MP3s or something on it.

I did, but I've taken everything off it. It says I have 49mb of internal space and 29mb on the SD card (the card is empty now, I formatted it). I don't think space is the problem. How do I run the APK file?

You evidently have not removed everything, since you have feck all space left. You can't "run" the apk without installing it, and you can't install it without space.

Well, I've taken all the photos and music off it. I just deleted a bunch of games I had downloaded and now I'm up to 81mb internal. How much space do I need to install it?

Before I downloaded the APK file it said "No application can be found to open this file." When I tried to run the installer it didn't say anything about a lack of space, it said the same thing again.

Do it via the marketplace. No reason to mess around with manual installation really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 wet_dog

I wish I could. The reason I'm reduced to this is that I'm not able to download anything from the Marketplace. That's what the thread title is about.

I'm trying to install it via Google Play on the phone, but the 'install' button is non-responsive.

The app is only 1.52mb on the Marketplace, so I don't think it's a space issue.

Just tried it again, same crap: "Download was unsuccessful, please try again later."

Op, your problem is a lack of space. Uninstall apps, you.can reinstall after.

Or you can go into.app settings for apps like facebook and n clear data

Sounds like your storage is corrupted, so no file can be saved.

    Try factory reset.

    Try factory reset.

Both the internal and SD memory? Unlikely.
Can he phone install apps to SD at all? If it can, format the SD to FAT from a PC and try to install the APK to there

I can't download anything from the Marketplace, that's my problem.

I cleared the internet cache, and now I'm up to 124mb internal space. How much space could I possible need to download and install a 1.52mb app?

I can't do a factory reset because that will delete my text messages, which is what I'm trying to backup.

It's a micro SD and I don't have an SD adapter, so I don't think I can use it on my PC.

Is downloading this app the only way to back up my texts? It seems like such a simple thing, is there no other way to do it?

Keep trying to reformat the SD until it registers as being empty is all I can think of. Then download and install app to SD (if you can).

Can you install the app via play.google.com on a PC?
Check the settings for storage and make sure the right location is selected for default storage?
