Right, before I buy another eBay dud, I want to know if anyone has experience with third-party batteries.

Specifically, I could get batteries from either Anker or OWC (MacSales).

Does anyone have experience with either of those brands, or could recommend another (non-Apple) one?

    Which battery? 1 vote

Simple - you get what you pay for.

But you already know that by now right ?

Wow, some shocking feedback there. Always went with genuine replacements and never had a problem, all the way back to the "Wallstreet" days....

Just beware that you will have to pay some tax (import tax?). I had to when I got some stuff from OWC. I think if the value is more that 50 euros or dollars there is tax payable.

There may be terrible feedback however, without knowing the full background of that particular person's circumstance. I'd generally take it with a pinch of salt.
A battery is a consumable part - They don't last forever and all down to what you actually do on the mac will determine how long a battery will last etc..

Plus, people love to moan :)

169 out of 262 giving it one star would suggest its a bit more than "moaners". Maybe you should read some of the complaints before you go into patronising mode.

Here's something I've learnt in the IT industry...

If something works well as intended... yeah, no one is gonna post online and say how great it is or ring a call centre and tell you this works great etc

If something doesn't work as intended... then it is gonna be plastered all over the shop, in every form.

Just to add 169 out of 262 giving it one star...

How many batteries have been sold since... ? thousands? if not more...

Yeah, I'll still take it with a pinch of salt.

I'm sure a lot of those who had problems also didn't bother leaving feedback. Personally, its obvious terrible feedback to me, I would avoid it big time. Strange though, it coming from the Apple Store and all. The fact the majority of reviews are negative suggest it has problems, and i'd rather not chance buying it if it meant that i'd have to deal with them too.

It was an old technology device, battery life wouldn't be great - compared to more recent units !! There's the point, that laptop typically got 3 to 4 hours max from a fully charged battery, great when it was new but compared to modern laptops it would elicit a poor response from users. Given real world usage - Aperture - FCP - Photoshop - that life would drop to about 2 to 3 hours.

The MBP generation before that model was subject to a battery recall which I availed of. This was after 3 years of excellent battery life from the original battery. 2 to 3 hours of typical use. Modern battery life figures are based on a certain percentage of non-use/standby time and are not in the slightest realistic.

I have a 2012 i7 15" MBP which gives about 3.5 hours of useful realistic life despite what the brochure says. All manufacturers give unrealistic figures for battery life, more fool the people who actually expect those figures in real life situations. Using FCP with the primary graphics processor (Nvidia) and pushing that i7 to it's limits is going to eat power. Play back HD video or use Audition to edit multiple audio tracks or use Logic Pro with lots of instruments is going to strain that battery.

I'd trust a genuine Apple battery over a cheap eBay knock-off any day of the week - at least I'd have a better chance of having any problems dealt with by Apple - try that on eBay . . .

In all fainess, Ken, looking through the first selection of 1 stars show consistent stories.....60-80 cycles and the battery is gone/dying/dead. Shutting down at 90%, swelling and warping. I think the users of these machines would be used to 2.5/3 hours battery life from their machines, I don't think that they are expecting 10 hour battery life from the new battery.

Yet again, that doesn't reflect the actually quality of the product though to be honest. Plus you have the warranty to fall back on if such a situation was to arise.

http://discussions.apple.com - Nothing but complaints.. Millions of them! You'll be there all day looking for a good one...

Does that indicate Apple products overall are bad and should be avoided?

Of course it does if that many are faulty.

    Hmmmm.

Either I'm doing a terrible job explaining this or else you're missing the point..

Neither, you just don't seem to know what you're talking about, so I'll leave it there.

That would be your opinion so, but I would say you're a bit native in the IT world / dealing with the general public..

Point is, people moan about things but that doesn't actually mean there is a problem. After all, you're looking at the internet... bit like using Wikipedia for college research...

Final point... Better off buying a battery directly from Apple instead of a knock off.

Yes, 4 1/2 years worked in Apple ....no idea what I'm talking about.

With your condescending attitude I wouldn't be going to you for IT advice, but I presume you wouldn't t call a customer a "moaner" to their face.

Just because you worked at said company doesn't mean you know what you're talking about.
How do we know you weren't just a cleaner there?Come on man, this is the internet....

You'd be surprised at what I know. ;)

    Agree to disagree.
